LAMP.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRnDERIo E. BALDWIN,
a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in lamps, and is particularly adapted for miners cap lamps of the generating acetylene type, and has for its object to provide a lamp body having a base secured to the lamp body by a screw thread or other coupling means, and a supporting hook which may be safely used to obtain a purchase while coupling or uncoupling the parts.
Cap hooks have been attached to lamps by soldering the same to the outside of the lamp body along a substantially vertical line. When attached in this manner, however, the solder frequently gives way when pressure is applied to the side of the hook, as is naturally done upon unscrewing the base from the lamp body, the strain on the soldered portion following the line of the solder. Not only this, but especially in acetylene lamps for the use of miners, where the metal of the lamp body is made quite thin in order to produce a lamp light in weight, the metal itself will bend and give under the above conditions until the metal adjacent to the hook is fractured. I overcome this difficulty in my preferred form by perforating the side wall of the body of the lamp, passing the hook through said perforation and soldering the internal end on the inner vertical wall of the shell in such a position that the internal portion shall be substantially out of a vertical posi tion; 2'. 6., out of the vertical plane passing through the perforation and the axis of the screw threads, and preferably in a horizontal position, the result being that when the hook is secured in this manner and pressure is applied to the hook, as frequently happens when using it as a fulcrum for the thumb to obtain a purchase when unscrewing the carbid container, the strain does not come in line with the soldered portion but at a substantial angle to it, with the result that the sidewise pressure upon the hook does not loosen the solder or fracture the body of the lamp.

In order to accomplish my purpose, the soldered end 5, when soldered to the vertical side wall, must be substantially out of the normal vertical so as to lie without the vertical plane passing through the perforation and is preferably secured to the vertical wall of the lamp body in a horizontal position, as shown.
As will be evident to those skilled in the art, my invention permits of modifications without departing from the spirit thereof or the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a lamp, the combination of a lamp body having a perforation, a base removably secured thereto, said body and base having engaging surfaces that may be disengaged by a relatively rotary movement of said parts about a normally vertical axis, and a supporting hook having an external portion and a portion passing throughsaid perforation and secured to the inside of said lamp body, said internal portion extending in a direction substantially out of the normal vertical.
2. In a lamp the combination of a lamp body having a substantially vertical side wall provided with a perforation, a removable base, said body and base being provided with engaging surfaces which may be disengaged by a relative rotary movement of said parts about a common axis, and a supporting hook having an external portion and a portion extending through said persaid parts, and a rigid supporting hook having an external portion and a portion extending through said perforation and at tached to the inside of said side wall in a position that is normally substantially hori- 16 zontal.
