JOSEPH WALKER, O-IE BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND.
SUPPORT FOR NOTE-BOOKS AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 1, 1913. Serial No: 745,702.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH WALKER, subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Augusta Works, 19-21 Warstone Lane, Birmingham, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supports for -Note-Books and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to rests or supports for note books and the like and, although applicable to other uses, is particularly intended for application to a typewriter.
The principal objects of the invention are to provide the frame which carries the book with means for preventing accidental turning over of the leaves, with means for adjusting the same vertically and angularly in a horizontal direction, with means for adjusting the slope of the same and with means, when it is to beused on a typewriter, for fixingit securely to the frame of any ordinary machine.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings. which illustrate one convenient constructibnof the improved device:-Figure 1 is a front viewshowing the parts in operative position for holding the leaves of a book; Fig. 2 is a side view of the same; 'Fig. 3 is a partial front view showing the parts in the position permitting the leaves to be turned; and Fig. 4 is a partial side view of the same.
' The frame a is made of stout wire bent into a substantially rectangular shape and provided at the lower central portion with a clip 7) by which it'is pivoted to the upper end (preferably downwardly turned toward the front as shown in Fig. 2) of a vertical standard a. The ivoting is efiected on a pin d provided wit a fly-nut e for gripping the clip 6 to the standard 0 when the frame a has been adjusted to the desired slope. The said standard 0" is of round section and is vertically slidable in a hollow fixed column f. A screw with a fiy-nut h is provided on saidco umn f to hold said standard 0 in the'desired vertical position,
,' the standard being also capable of rotation in the column to adjust it in a horizontal direction.
The book-carryin frame a .is provided with means for hol ing the front'and back leaves of the book when it is opened and folded back over same" such means may be mounted 'on either si e ofthe frame but preferablyon the left-hand side as shown in Fig. l, and they consist of the following parts :A curved arm 2', adapted to engage the front leaves, is pivoted on a suitable bracket 4% arranged on the lower left-hand side of theframe a. in the inclined bearings a so that it moves from a substantially vertical to a substantially horizontal position and in so doing its freeend o approaches the book. The said free end 0 is curved outwardly to form a finger piece for manipulating the arm and also to facilitate removing or inserting the leaves under the same, if desired, while the arm is in ite operative position. The arm 11 and hinge portion thereof are preferably formed of a piece of wire which is bent into a U-shape as shown at 3) adjacent the hinge 'to engage the frame a and serve as a stop when the arm z' is down. Said wire is also provided with a cranked extension ghehind the hinge for a purpose hereinafter explained. The rear part of the book is Such arm is pivoted Patented June 2, 1914.
engaged by another curved wire arm r having a downwardly extending portion 8 which is hinged by suitable'clips t to the side of the frame a so that the arm r may move to and from the rear of the book. Such rear arm is provided with a curved-up end a to serve the same purposes as the curved end 0 of the front arm 2'; The lower end of the wire forming the hinge of such rear arm r is bent at right angles as shown at r (Fig. 1) and lies adjacent the cranked extension 9 aforesaid and a loose ring to is passed around both of said extension parts 9 and 0 so that the rear arm 7* is operated when the fr nt arm 0 is moved. By this means the two arms are simultaneously moved into their operative and inoperative positions.
When the device is to be attached to a typewriter the lower end of the fixed column f is provided with a bracket w having a U- shaped lug g which is of asuiiicient width to enable it to be engaged freely with the bottom flange of the frame of any ordinary typewriter even if such flange be curved. To fix such brackets to the flange, screws 2 with fly-nuts are passed through the bracket to grip the flange to the vertical part of the lu What I clalm as my invention and desire movable toward and from the rear of the Iranie in a plane substantially at right an-' glee to the plane of the frame, and another arm pivoted thereon so as to be movable at the front of said frame and substantially parallel to the plane thereof.
2. A support for a note book or the like comprising a frame for receiving the note book or the like, means for supporting said frame, an arm pivoted thereon so as to be movable toward and from the rear of the frame in a-plane substantially at right angles to the plane of the frame, another arm pivoted thereon so as to be movable at the front of said frame and substantially parallel to the plane thereof, and means for causing said arms to be moved simultaneously into their operative and inope'ative position.
3. A support for note book or the like comprising a rectangular frame for receiving the note book or the like, means for supporting said frame, a horizontal arm at the rear of said frame having vertical portion by which it is hinged on a vertical axis to one side of said irame, an arm at the trout frame an arm at the front of Said framehaving a right angle portion pivoted to the said side of said frame on an axis inclined to the plane thereof, a right angle extension at the lower end of the vertical portion'of the rear ar1n, a cranked extension to the aforesaid right angle portion of the front arm, and a loose ring' connecting said extensions. In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
