DRESS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EMMA STERN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at 131 East Eighty-third street, New York city, New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Dresses, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to womens garments and more particularly to a dress in which the waist and skirt portions are attached to or made integral with one another, thereby forming a one-piece garment.

One of the objects of the invention 1s to provide a dress which is especially adapted to be used when traveling or automobiling, at which times the wearer of the dress may desire to loosen or remove her corsets, and at the same time present a neat and trim appearance.

Another object is to provide a dress of this character which may be easily and quickly adjusted as to size. I

Another object of the invention is to pro- Vide means forming a support for the bust when the dress is worn without corsets or with loosened corsets.

Other objects will in part be obvious and in part be pointed out hereinafter.

In the accompanying drawing showing an illustrative embodiment of the invention in which the same reference numerals refer to similar parts of the several figures, Figure 1 is a front view of the dress as worn. Fig. 2 is a back view of the dress as worn. Fig. 3 is a front view of the dress showing the waist band or belt and the free ends of the shoulder straps unfastened. Fig. 4: is a back view of the dress showing the waist band unfastened.

Referring to the figures, the dress, which, as shown, is a one-piece garment, comprises a waist portion 1 and a skirt portion 2. The dress is of course provided with a suitable opening 3, which is preferably in the front thereof, and which is adapted to be maintained closed by any suitable fastening device 41 in the usual manner.

In order to provide for adjusting the dress at the waist line, a draw string or tape 5 is provided which, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4;, encircles the dress at the waist line. The free ends of the draw string are at the front of the dress in order that they may be accessible to the wearer of the dress for the purose of tying them together. strip 6 of suitable material forming a channel through which the string freely passes and the dress, at the back, is provided with sufficient fullness to allow the waist line of the dress to adapt itself to the waist line of the wearer.

In order to conceal the draw string 5 and strip 6 from view when the dress is worn, a waist band or belt 7 is provided which band is preferably secured at the sides of the dress and has

8 and 9 at the front and back of the dress respectively, as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4:- After the dress has been adjusted to lit the wearer by means of the draw string 5, the ends thereof are tied at the front of the dress as indicated in Fig. 3, after which the front free ends 8 of the belt 7 are fastened together by any suitable fastening means, such as a hook and eye, for example, thus concealing the draw string from view, as clearly indicated in Fig. 1. The hack free ends 9 of the belt 7 are provided with a buckle 10 whereby they may be adjustably fastened to one another thereby conforming to the waist line of the wearer and concealing the strip 6, as clearly indicated in Fig. 2.

It will of course be understood from the above description that by means of the draw string 5 and the adjustable fastening means 10 upon the free ends 9 of the belt 7 the waist line of the dress may be adjusted to fit snugly the figure of the wearer when corsets are worn or when, for any reason, the corsets are either loosened or left off entirely. It will be seen that in either instance the dress will present a neat, trim appearance.

In order to provide for adjusting the dress to conform to the bust of the wearer, and also in order to form a support for the bust when the corsets are not worn, shoulder straps 11 are provided which are attached to the back of the dress adjacent the waist line thereof at 12, as clearly shown in Fig. 4. The straps 11 pass over the shoulders, as shown, and are provided with means whereby the front or free ends 18 may be adj ustably fastened to the front of the dress adjacent the waist line thereof. As shown, the belt 7 is provided with buttons 1 1 and the free ends 13 of the shoulder straps 11 are provided with a plurality of button holes 15, any one of which is adapted to be secured to its corresponding button 14:, depending upon the size of the person wearing the dress, as will be readily understood. It will also be understood that, if the dress'is'worn without corsets, these straps 11 will not only serve to present a neat appearance, but will also serve as supports for the bust of the wearer. The dress is preferably provided with a pocket, as indicated in dotted lines at 16, in Fig. 1, it being of course understood that if desired a similar pocket could be placed upon the other side of the dress.

lVhile the dress is peculiarly adapted for traveling purposes it may also be used as a maternity dress, and it is also well adapted as a school dress for girls, or it may be used in connection with athletic sports, such as tennis.

A dress made in the manner set forth in the specification is easily and quickly adjusted to the body of the wearer and will always present a neat appearance whet-her corsets are worn or not.

Having described this invention in connection with the illustrative embodiment thereof to the details of which disclosure the invention is not of course to be limited, what is claimed as new and what is desired to be secured by Letters Patent is set forth in the appended claims:

1. A one-piece dress comprising waist and skirt portions, a draw string encircling the waist for adjusting the size of the waist line and a belt encircling the waist and-secured to the dress at the sides thereof, said belt having free front and back end portions, fastening means for said front end portions and adjust-able fastening means for said back end portions.

2. A one-piece dress comprising waist and skirt portions, shoulder straps secured to the back of the dress adjacent the waist line,

'and means for adjustably fastening the free ends of said shoulder straps to the front of the dress adjacent the waist line.

3. A one-piece dress comprising waist and skirt portions, said dress being provided with fullness in the back thereof adjacent the waist line, a draw string encircling the waist for adjusting the size thereof, a belt covering said draw string, shoulder straps secured to the back of the dress adjacent the waist line, and means for adjustably fastening the free ends of said shoulder straps to the front of the dress adjacent the waist line.
