T0 all who/m fit may concern Be it known that I, JAMES S. TURNER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Covering Rolls with Leather, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to machines for applying leather covering to rolls such as those used in spinning machines, and is an improvement on the construction set forth in Letters Patent of the United States No. 609,597 granted to me August 23, 1898, said machine embodying a pair of oppositely disposed stretching arms having pins on their outer ends adapted to be embedded in the ends of the leather band for the purpose of stretching the same over a roll. Mechanism consisting of a horizontal shaft having worm gears and levers having gear segments meshing with said worm gears is provided for operating the stretching arms, said arms being pivoted to the levers.
The object of the present invention is to provide an improved construction of the frame which supports the stretching arms, the operating mechanism and the roll-supporting means, the `objects obtained by the improved construction being simplicity, compactness and strength of construction and a provision of an unobstructed space over the roll whereby the convenience of operation of the machine is enhanced.
The invention consists in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim.
Of the accompanying drawings: Figure 1V represents a side elevation of a machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 represents a fragmentary section on the line 3-3, Fig. 1.
Similar reference characters indicate the same parts in all the gures.
The frame of the improved machine comprises two substantially U-shaped members located side by side and spaced apart, each member having a base portion 12 and two upwardly projecting ears 13 at opposite ends of the base portion. The said members are rigidly connected by suitable means such as a web 14, Fig. 3, between the upper edges of the base portions, the entire frame, including the base portions 12, ears 13, and connecting web 14, being preferably formed as a single casting which is provided with extensions 15, forming, with the upper surface of the web 14, a transverse guide for the slides 16, on which are the standards 17 provided to support the shaft 18 on which the rolls 19 to be covered are mounted. The standards 17 are preferably provided as shown in the above mentioned patent with posts 20 having bearings 21 for the shaft 18, and screw threaded stems 22 engaging tapped sockets in the standards 17.
The ears 13 are arranged in pairs, there being o-ne pair of ears at each side of the roll-supporting means. The base portions 12 are spaced apart to permit the insertion between them of a horizontal shaft 23, which is j ournaled in bearings 24 suitably secured to the ends of the base portions 12, and preferably by means of pivot screws 25 engaged with the base portions 12 and with the bearings, as indicated by Figs. 1 and 2. Pivoted at 26 to the upper ends of the ears 13 are two levers composed of shorter arms 27 projecting above the ears 13, and longer arms 2S extending downwardly below the roll supporting means into the spaces between the pairs of ears 13, the lower ends of the arms 28 being provided with gear segments 29 meshing with worm gears 30 affixed to the shaft 23. To the upper ends of the shorter lever arms 27 are pivoted at 34, the two stretching arms 35, which are provided at their outer ends with pins 40 adapted to engage the end ortions of the leather covering strip 41 Fig. 1) on a roll 19.
j The machine is operated as stated in the above mentioned patent by rstplacing the roll 19 on its supports. The leather strip which. is to form the peripheral covering of the roll is then placed around the roll, its inner surface having been rst coated with cement, and the outer ends of the arms 35 lare swung inwardly and brought into contact with the strip near its ends. Then by rotating the shaft 23 in such a direction as to cause the arms to move toward each other, the pins 40 become embedded in the leather, and a continued rotation of the shaft causes the ends of the band to be brought together. When the arms are not in use, they are swung outwardly from the space between the ears 13 as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1, the projection of the lever arms 27 above the supporting ears 13 permitting the stretching arms to be swung outwardly so far that they are entirely removed from the space above the roll 19 and otter no obstruction to the removal of a covered roll and the insertion of another roll. The stretching' arms are supported by gravitation in their displaced positions. The improved construction has a marked advantage over that shown by my former patent above mentioned, in which the stretching arms cannot be swung outwardly from the space above the rollsupporting means, said space being continuously obstructed by the stretching arms and by the hooks which support them when raised from the roll.
The base portions 12 of the frame members are provided with .means whereby they may be secured to bench 45, said means as here shown including ears 43 cast on the outer sides of the said base portions and adapted to bear on the upper surface of the bench, said ears being perforated to receive attaching screws. The bench will be cut away to receive the portions of the frame projecting below the ear 43, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3.
It will be seen that by the described construction of the supporting` frame th-e number of parts is reduced to the minimum, and provision is made for providing an entirely unobstructed space above the rollesupporting means between the levers which operate the stretching arms, said arms being displaceable outwardly, as described, 'from said space.
rlhe velongated guide formed by the web 14. and extensions l5 enables an elongated shaft 18 carrying a plurality of rolls 19 to be supported by the frame, said shaft being shiftable longitudinally to bring either or' its rolls into operative relation with the stretching arm. The downward extension of the longer lever arms 28 below the rollsu'pporting means and into the base, and the location 'of the shaft 23 below said roll-sup porting means, enables the arms 2S to be made relatively long as compared with the shorter arms 27, so that the force developed by said levers is much greater than that developed by the levers arranged as shown by the above-mentioned patent.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A machine of the character described comprising a frame having a base and leversupporting ears projecting upwardly from opposite end po-rtions of the base, roll-sup porting means between said ears, bearings supported by the base below the ears, and below the roll-supporting means, a shaft journaled in said bearings and provided with worm gears, levers pivoted to said ears and havingshorter arms projecting above the ears and longer arms, extending downwardly below the roll-supporting means and provided with gear segments meshing with said wo 1m gears, and stretching arms pivoted to the shorter arms of said levers and adapted to swing inwardly over the rollsup'po'rting means, and to swing outwardly from the space between said ears to leave an unobstructed space for the insertion and removal of a roll, said stretching arms being so arranged that they may be held in inoperative position by gravity alone.
2. A machine of the character stated comprising a frame composed or' two spaced apart and rigidly connected base members, and two pairs of spaced apart ears projecting upwardly from opposite ends of the base members, said base members being provided with means for engaging a support, r'OlLsupporting means between the two pairs of ears, bearings secured to the base members, between the end portions thereof and below the roll-supporting means, a shaft journaled in said bearings and provided with worm gears, levers pivoted to the upper portions of the ears and having shorter arms projecting above the ears, and longer arms extending downwardly between the ears below the roll-supporting means and provided rwith gear segments meshing with said worm gears, and stretching arms pivoted to the shorter arms of said levers and adapted to swing inwardly over the rollsupporting means, and to swing outwardly from the space between said ears to leave an unobstructed space above said means, the downward extension of said longer armspermitting them to be made of maximum length.
