citizen of the United States, residing at by drawings forming a part of the same.
My invention relates to that class of machines which are employed in winding a paper Wrapper around the outside of a paper box. In machines of this class the box is placed upon a rotatable form, of rectangular or other shape, adapted to lit the interior of the box, and a strip of paper of proper width to cover the sides of the box is taken from a coil drawn over a gumming roll by which adhesive material is applied to one side of the paper. The end of the gummed strip is then applied to a box side and the'box held upon the box form is then rotated to wind the gummed strip around the box, a sufficient length having been severed to cover the entire box side with its ends overlapping. In machines of this class the gumming mechanism and the rotating box form are usually placed at opposite ends of the machine at considerable distance apart in order to allow the adhesive material upon the gummed side of the coveringstnip to become tempered or partially set.
My present invention relates to improvements in different parts of't'he covering machine, and it has for its objects to provide means for regulating the amount of adhesive material by the operator at the oppo sit-e end of the machine; to provide adjust-- able means for supporting the strip of gummed paper and to provide an improved mechanism for rotating the box form. These objects, among others, I accomplish by the construction and arrangement of parts. as hereinafter described and pointed out in the annexed claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a covering machine embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a rear or end view of the paper coil supporting mechanism. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the gum box and the scraping'mechanism for removing surplus gum from the strip. Fig, i is a top view of the mechanism for adjustingone of the tension rolls. Referring to the drawings, 1 denotes a supporting stand or table upon which are mounted posts 2, 2, carrying at their upper ends a pair of parallel horizontal bars, one of which is shown at 3, the position of these bars being shown at 3, 3 Figs. 4 and 5. Mounted upon the table 1 and projecting rearwardly are a pair of brackets 4: having bearings 5 for the slidable rods 6-, 6, provided with splines 7 7, engaging keyways in the bearings 5. Attached to the inner end of the rod 6 is a disk 8, and attached to the inner end. of the rod, 6 is a disk 8. The disks 8 and 8' are held eccentrically on the rods 6, 6 and each disk is provided with a radial slot, 9, Fig. 1, adapted to receive a spindle 10, Fig. 2, on which, the covering strip of paper 11 is wound. The disks 8 and 8 are adjusted the proper distance apart to receive the coil 11 which is applied between the disks by droppingthe spindle 10 into the radial slots 9- Supported by the brackets 4 are rolls 12, 13, andthe covering strip 14 is taken from the coil 11 beneath the roll 12 and over the roll 13 to a roll 15 supported by a bracket 16 projecting from the rear end of a gum box 17 held upon the bars 3, 3. Rotatable in the gum box 17 is a gum roll 18. Journaled in suitable bearings in front of the gum roll 18 is a rocking shaft 19 provided with radial arms 20. and 21, in the free ends of which a rod; 22 is supported. From the roll 15 the covering strip is carried between a pair of clamping plates 23 pressed together by a spiral spring 24 in order to provide a frictional resistance to the movement of'thecovering strip. From the plates 23 the covering strip is carried over the gum roll18 beneath the rocking. shaft 19 and over the rod 22, as shown in Fig. 3. A scraping action is thereby imparted to the gummed side of tlie covering strip by the rod 22 which is capable of being increased or diminislied by swinging the rod 22 around the wound around the box.

From the scraping mechanism just described the covering strip passes over a roll 25 and beneath a roll 26 to a cutting mechanism 27, by which the strip is severed in the usual manner. I From the cutting mechanism 27 the strip is carried to a box held upon the box form 28 attached to the end of a rotatable spindle 29. The rolls 25 and 26 are each held in a framework 30 which is adjustably attached to the parallel bars 3. The attachment of the framework 30 to the parallel bars 3 is accomplished by means of a single hand screw 31, which not only clamps the framework to the bars, but by means of the novel bearing of the framework upon the bars also serves to square the framework with the bars, thereby bringing both frameworks parallel.
Referring to Figs. 4 and 5, the framework 30 is provided at one end with lugs 32 slid able upon the bar 3'. The opposite end of the framework is provided with separated lug 33 and 34 slidable upon the bar 3. Between the lugs 33 and 34 is a curved bracket 35 extending over the top of the bar 3 and carrying the clamping screw 36. The clamping screw 36 carries a swiveled foot 37 which bears against the bar 3 midway between the lugs 33 and 34. Asthe clamping screw 36 is tightened it brings both lugs 33 and 34 into contact with the bar 3, thereby squaring the framework 30'with the bar. The same adjusting device is also applied to the framework which carries the roll 25.
In the operation of the machine the box is applied to the rectangular box form 28 held in the position shown in Fig. 1 with its longer axis inclined. The end of the gummed covering strip is applied to one side of the box near its end, and the box form rotated in the direction of the arrow 38, Fig. 1, causing the gummed covering strip to be The box form is carried upon the spindle 29, Fig. 7, and is rotated through the miter gears 39 from a countershaft 40 which is operatively connected with a driving pulley 41 at the will of the operator through a clutching mechanism, comprising a driving member 42 connected by a sleeve 43 with the 41 and a driven member 44 having a spline connection with the shaft 40. The driven member of the clutching mechanism is provided at its end opposite the driving member with four equidistant semicircular notches 45. K
The shaft 40 is journaled at one end in a fixed bearing 46. From one side of the hearing 46 an arm 47 projects toward the driven member of the clutch mechanism and supported by the arm 47 is an angular rod or driving pulley driving member 42 by means of the spring 49 and rotated against the stop pin 48.
The clutching mechanism is'thrown into engagement at will by the attendant by means of a foot treadle 50 connected by a link 51 with a bell crank lever pivoted to a rigid part of the framework and operatively connected with the driven member of the clutching mechanismby a collar 53.
In the normal position of the driving mechanism the clutching members are dis engaged and the shaft 40 and spindle 29 are held from rotation by the engagement of the stop pin 48 with one of the notches 45. The notches 45. are so arranged that whenever the driving mechanism is stopped one corner of the box form will always be brought uppermost, as shown in Fig. 1. In this position of the box form one of the sides of the box, in the present instance, as shown in Fig. 1, the side a will be held uppermost in an inclined position, and in proper position for the covering strip to be smoothed by the hand of the operator. At the next partial rotation of thebox form the side I) will be brought into the inclined position previously occupied by side a and in like manner the sides 0 and d will be brought into suitable position to allow the covering strip to be smoothed upon and pressed against the sideof the box then uppermost.
The adjustment of the rod 22 around the rocking shaft 19 is accomplished from the front end of the machine by means of a link 54 pivoted at one end to an arm 55, and having a swiveled connection at its opposite end with a screwthreaded rod 56 held in a screwthreaded bearing 57 supported by the framework of the machine. The screwthreaded rod 56 is provided with a hand wheel 58 which can be readily reached by the operator from his position in front of the box form 28. The rotation of the screwthreaded rod56 rocks the spindle 29, swinging the arm 20 and rod 22 around their axis of rotation so asto deflect the covering strip to a greater or less extent as it passes between the shaft 19 and rod 22.
I claim,
1. In a box covering machine, means for applying gum to one side of a covering strip, a rocking shaft, a radial arm carried by said shaft, a rod held. in said radial arm and bearing against the gummed surface of the covering strip, and means for adjusting the pressure of said rod against the covering strip, comprising an arm on said rocking shaft, a link connected at one end with said radial arm, and an adjusting screw connected with the opposite end of said link.
2. In a box covering machine, a framework comprising a pair of horizontal parallel rods, a frame supported by said rods and movable thereon, a roll carried by said frame, and means for clamping said frame to one of said parallel rods and simultaneously squaring the frame with said rod.
3. In a box covering machine, a framework comprising a pair of horizontal parallel rods, a frame supported by said rods and adjustable thereon, and means for attaching said frame to one of said parallel rods and simultaneously squaring the frame with said rod, comprising a pair of separated lugs on said frame arranged to contact with one side of said rod, and means supported by said frame for applying pressure against the opposite side of said rod between said lugs.
4. In a box covering machine, a framework, a rotatable box form supported by said framework, means for imparting a ro tating movement to said box form, and
means, operative upon the release of said box form from its rotating mechanism for locking said box form from rotatlve movement in either direction when said box form 25 is in each of a number of predetermined positions.
In a box covering machine, a polygonal rotatable box form means for rotating said box form, means for connecting and dis- 30 plete rotation corresponding with the num- 3 ber of sides in said box form.
