This invention relates to finishing machines and particularly to a cloth and silk finishing machine, and has for an object the provision of an improved mechanism whereby the finish of the material passed through the machine will be of the same quality throughout.
Another object in view is to provide a finishing machine witha roller and means for adjusting the same, such structure 00- acting with the paste roller whereby the amount of paste supplied to the finishing roller is controlled.
A still further object in view is to rearrange the various rollers in a finishing machine and to limit the same to a minimum in number, while providing means for causing a proper application of paste to any variety of cloth or silk passing through the machine.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a top plan view of a machine embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view through Fig. 1 on line 2*2; Fig. 3 is a front view of the structure shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a side view of the structure shown in Fig. 1, certain parts being broken'away for better illustrating the construction.
In finishing machines of various kinds a paste pot or receptacle is used and a plurality of rollers are associated therewlth. Some of these rollers merely loosely contact with the paste supply roller with a View of limiting the amount of paste used on the cloth passing through the machine. However, it has been found that more or less paste is applied according to various circumstances, as, for instance, according to the thickness of the paste and weight of rollers. In the present invention means have been provided for determining with reasonable certainty the proper amount of paste to be applied, so that the finished cloth will all be finished exactly in the same manner throughout and without flaws.

which the frame 1 may be of any desired kind. Mounted on frame 1 is a receptacle 'or trough 2 for receiving the paste 3 which may be of any desired kind. J ournaled in suitable bearings adjacent the upper part of the receptacle 2 is a feed roller 4 which, if desired, may be provided with a specially constructed peripheral covering 5. The roller 4 may be driven from any suitable source either by belts, gearing or other means. As shown in Fig. 2 the roller 4 is partially submerged in paste 3 and is adapted to carry some of the paste upwardly so as to apply the same to the cloth 6 passing through the machine. In order that the correct amount of paste may be applied to the cloth 6 a roller 7 is provided which is adapted to engage roller 4 or be spaced any desired distance therefrom and thereby squeeze or force the paste either entirely or partially from roller 4. It is, of course,
evident that the contact between these two rollers is not such as to squeeze all of the paste from roller 4. Such action would defeat the purpose of the device.
The roller 7 is provided with a suitable bearing shaft journaled in sliding blocks 8 and 9, said roller being loosely journaled and not being driven by any means except by contact with roller 4. The blocks 8 and 9 are connected by a cross bar 10 so that when cross bar 10 is moved the roller will be bodily moved toward and from roller 4. In order to provide the proper adjustment of roller 7 one or more adjusting screws 11 are provided, the same being formed with stops 12 and 13 which permit a free rotary movement of the screws in bar 10 but will not permit a longitudinal movement independent of bar 10. The single screw or plurality of screws if used are threaded and extend through a feed bar 14 rigidly secured to part of frame 1. A hand wheel 15 is connected with the screw 11 so that upon the rotation thereof roller 7 may be moved toward or from roller 4 for varying and controlling the amount of paste supplied to the cloth 6 as the same is passed through the machine. In order to easily ascertain the amount of paste to be supplied to any given silk or cloth an indicating arm 16 is connected with bar 10 and is adapted to travel across a scale 17 (Fig. 1).
Cloth 6 is passed over roller 18 when be-' ing fed into the machine and from thence over a second guiding roller 19, after which it passes between roller 4 and the presser roller 20. From presser roller 20 the cloth passes over a guiding roller 21 and from thence to the spindle 22 on which it is wound, an adjustable roller 23 being associated therewith, said roller having a shaft 24: projecting into vertically arranged slots 25. Roller 23 presses somewhat against the cloth arranged on spindle 22, the pressure being usually that exerted by the weight of the roller, although if desired spring pres sure or other pressure could be utilized. As the cloth on spindle 22 increases roller 23 naturally rises in slot 25. As the cloth is passed between rollers 4 and 20 the same is supplied with paste and roller 20 presses the paste into the cloth, thus producing the finish desired.
Roller 20 is supported by shaft 27 which shaft is journaled in arms 28, which arms may be moved up and down by links 29. The links 29are provided with extensions or pins 30 fitting into the bifurcated member 31, as shown in Fig. 2, which bifurcated members are moved pivotally on their pivotal support 32 by a handle 33. By moving both. handles 33 the roller 20 may be bodily raised or lowered at any time. When adjusting the roller 7 the blocks 8 and 9 are guided in grooves 3st by guide rods 35, thus insuring an equal movement of both ends of the roller 7 even though there is only one adjusting screw 11.
What I claim is 1. In a machine of the character described, a paste receptacle, a paste roller arranged adjacent said receptacle, a controlling roller arranged adjacent said paste roller, a sliding frame supporting said controlling roller, a plurality of guides for guiding said frame so that the controlling roller may be bodily moved toward and from said paste roller, an adjusting screw engaging said frame for moving the same, a presser roller arranged adjacent said paste roller, and means for guiding cloth so that the same will pass between the presser roller and the paste roller.
2. In a finishing machine for cloth, a paste roller, a supply receptacle partially presser roller, a paste controlling roller 7 adapted to engage said paste roller, a slide for supporting said controlling roller, said slide being provided with a depending guiding member adjacent each end, means defining a guideway for receiving said depending guiding members, a retaining bar extending through said depending guiding members for holding the same in said guide- 7 way as the slide is moved back and forth, and means for adjusting said slide and said controlling roller toward and from said paste roller. 7
4. In a finishing machine of the character described,'a paste roller, means for supplying paste to said paste roller, a controlling roller for controlling the amount of paste on said paste roller, a presser roller for pressing cloth against said paste roller, a pair of pivotally mounted members for supporting said presser roller, a link connected with each of said pivotally mounted members, pins connected with said links adjacent their upper end, bifurcated arms straddling said pins, a rock shaft secured to said bifurcated arms and a lever for actuating said rock shaft whereby said links-may be raised and lowered and said presser roller may be moved toward and from said paste roller.
