To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JAMES llloi-imin, Jr., a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Ohaton, in the Province of Alberta and Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and useful Car-Door, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to car doors, one of its objects being to provide a sliding door of the ordinary type and a grain door both of which are supported from the same track, means being provided whereby either of the doors can be used independently of the other, both can be used together, or both can be brought to position away from the door opening.
A further object is to provide anovel form of track for supporting the doors and for guiding the grain door into the door opening.
A further object is to provide a novel form of grain door together with means for holding it within the opening.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the coin bination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings :-Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a car structure and showing the outside sliding door in position across the door opening and the grain door out of active position. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing the grain door in active position and the outside sliding door removed from the door opening. Fig. is a section on line AB Fig. 2. Referring to the figures by characters of reference L designates a portion of a car structure having the usual door o iening M, there being stop brackets N and 0 upon the car structure at the ends of the paths of movement of the doors and another support ing bracket P below the path of one of the doors and adapted to assist in supporting said door and holding it against lateral displacement when the door is opened. Alranged upon the outcr side of the car structure between the door opening M and the bracket N is a retaining strap (ll of such length as to receive one of the doors when said door is in engagement with the bracket N.
Secured to the outer side of the car structure L and extending over the opening M and beyond the sides of said opening is a rail indicated generally at 1, this rail including an upwardly extending attaching flange 2 secured in any suitable manner to the car structure and this flange 2 extends upwardly from the inner edge of a supporting flange 3 which is straight from end to end and constitutes a bearing for rollers 1. These rollers have hangers 5 extending downwardly from them and attached to the outer or main sliding door 6. This door ex tends under the rail 1.
A flange 7 extends downwardly from the outer edge of the flange and the lower edge of this depending flange 7 is slidably engaged by a retaining lug 8 integral with each of the hangers Thus, as shown in Figs. l, 5 and 6, the door 6 is prevented from shifting outwardly so as to bring the rollers t out of position upon the rail 1. Lateral displacement of the lower portion of the door 6 is prevented by the guide bracket 1 as will be apparent by referring to Figs. 1 and 2.
By mounting the door 0 in the ilnanner shown it will be seen that the same can be moved to position across the opening M or to position away from the opening and against the stop bracket U.
Extending inwardly from the flange 7 is a lower supporting flange 9, that portion of the flange opposite the wall of the structure L being spaced slightly from the structure to form a slot 10 while that portion of the flange 9 extending across the opening M is extended back into the opening, as shown at 11. A guide strip 12 is secured across the upper portion of the opening and close to but spaced from the inwardly extending portion 1.1 of the flange 9 so that a slot 13 is thus formed in the upper portion of the door opening, this slot constituting a continuation of the slot 10. The inner edge of flange 9 and the portion 11 thereof is provided with a longitudinally extending inclined bearing portion 14. adapted to be engaged by conical rollers 15 carrying blocks 16 which extend downwardly through the slots 10 or 13, according to the position of the rollers. Each block has a hanger 17 hingedly connected to it and adapted to swing inwardly or outwardly relative thereto, the lower end of each hanger being hingedly connected to a stem 18 swiveled within a bracket 19. This bracket is secured to a grain door 20. As shown particularly in Fig. 7 the grain door is made up of two sections 21 and 22 hingedly connected, as at 23. Extending transversely of the section 21 is a channeled holding strip 24 which likewise extends across but is not secured to the section 22 of the door. A larger channeled strip 25 is secured to the section 22 and is adapted, when the two sections are in alinement, to receive a portion of the channeled strip 24. By then inserting a pin 26 or the like through the interfitting portions of the channeled strips 24 and 25, the door sections 21 and 22 can be fastened in alinement. It will be noted that when the channeled strips 24 and 25 are thus secured together, the distance between the opposed ends thereof is substantially equal to the width of the door opening whereas the door 20 projects beyond these ends sothat it is of slightly greater width than the door opening.
When the grain door is not in use it is supported between the structure L and the strap Q and against the bracket N as shown in Fig. 1. \Vhen the grain door is thus positioned, the main or outer door 6 can be extended across the opening M if desired, and as shown in Fig. 1 or it can be shifted to open position against the bracket 0. When door 6 is in the position shown in Fig. 2, the grain door can be shifted to active position. In order to set up the grain door within the opening M, the pin 26 is withdrawn so as thus to permit the sections 21 and 22 of the door to swing relative to each other. The door is then shifted longitudinally so as to cause the rollers 15 to travel along the inclined bearing portions 14 and the blocks 16 to travel from the slot 10 and into the slot 13. The door will thus swing around one side of the door opening and into said opening while the hangers 17 will also assume positions in the opening M. The door can then be pressed back into the opening while the sections 21 and 22 are out of alinement and after the side edges of the door have been brought to position within the car, said sections can be brought into alinement and the strips 24 and 25 secured together. Thus the sides of the door will lap the sides of the door opening while the ends of the strips 24 and 25 will abut against the sides of the door opening. The door will therefore be held against lateral displacement relative to the opening and likewise against outward movement through the opening. With the door in this position, the outer or main door 6 can be moved back into position across the door opening without interference by the grain door or any of the parts connected to the grain door.
If desired, and as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a small sliding door 27 can be provided in the lower portion of the door section 22.
lVhat is claimed is 1. The combination with a car structure having a door opening, of a rail extending along the outer side of the structure and above the opening, said rail having upper and lower door supporting flanges, said lower flange extending into the upper portion of the door opening, a main door suspended from the upper flange and movable along the outer side of the structure and across the outer side of the opening, and a grain door supported by the lower flange, said lower flange constituting means for guiding the grain door along the outer side of the car structure and into the door opening and toward the inner side of the car structure.
2. The combination with a car structure having a door opening, of a rail extending along the outer side of the structure said rail having upper and lower door supporting flanges, said lower flange extending into the upper portion of the door opening, a main door suspended from the upper flange and movable therealong outside of and parallel with the car structure to open or close the opening, a foldable grain door supported by the lower flange, said flange constituting means for guiding the grain door along the outer side of the structure and into the door opening, and means for securing the sections of the foldable door in alinement and with their outer side edges engaging the inner sides of the door opening.
3. The combination with a car structure having a door opening, of a rail extending along the outer side of the structure, said rail having upper and lower door supporting flanges, said lower flange extending into the upper port-ion of the door opening, a main door suspended from the upper flange and movable therealong outside of and parallel with 'the car structure to open or close the opening, a foldable grain door supported by the lower flange, said flange constituting means for guiding the grain door along the outer side of the structure and into the door opening, and means for securing the sections of the foldable door in alinement and with their outer side edges engaging the inner sides of the door opening, said fastening means cooperating with the sides of the door opening to hold the grain door against lateral displacement relative to the opening.
4. The combination with a car structure having a door opening, of a rail extending along the outer side of the structure above the opening and having an upper and a lower door supporting flange, said lower flange having a portion extended into the door opening, a main door suspended from the upper flange and movable close to and parallel with the outer side of the structure into or out of position across the door opening, a guide strip secured across the upper portion of the door opening and close to but spaced from the lower flange to form a guide block, rollers mounted upon the lower flange a grain door, and flexible connections between the rollers and grain door, said lower flange constituting means for guiding the grain door along the outer side of the car structure and into the door opening.
5. The combination with a car structure having a door opening, of a rail extending along the outer side of the structure above the opening and having an upper and a lower door supporting flange, said lower flange having a portion extended into the door opening, a main door suspended from the upper flange and movable close to and parallel with the outer side of the structure into or out of position across the door opening, a guide strip secured across the upper portion of the door opening and close to but spaced from the lower flange to form a guide block, rollers mounted upon the lower flange, a grain door made up of hingedly connected side sections, flexible connections between said sections and the rollers, said lower flange constituting means for guiding the grain door along the outer side of the car structure and into the door opening, the sections of the door being movable to positions out of alinement during such movement into the door opening, and fastening means carried by the sections and cooperating to shift the door sections into alinement and with their outer side edges lapping the inner sides of the door opening, said fastening means cooperating with the sides of the door opening to hold the door against lateral displacement relative to the opening.
