RICHARD WEBB BURNETT, or MONTREAL, QUEBEC, cANADA.
DUMP-GAR DOOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 9, 1913.
Application filed January 13, 1913. Serial No. 741,837.
To all whom 2'15 may concern:
Be it known that I, Rrciuao WEBB BUR- NE'IT, residing at the city of Montreal, Providence of Quebec,'Dominion of Canada, citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dump-Car Doors; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates particularly to the means for hinging the dump-doors of a dump car to the dump-door frames; andit has for its object to provide means for this purpose which will be grain tight, and at the same time, afford a strengthening device for the door and the part of the door-frame to which the door is connected.
To this end the invention may be said broadly to consist of a hinge extendlng from end to end of the hinged side of the door and adapted to stiffen the same.
For full comprehension, however, of my invention, reference mustbe had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar references indicate the same parts and wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the floor of a dump car containing my invention; Fig, 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on l1ne A A Fig. 1, and drawn to-a larger scale; Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of a portion of a dump-door with a part of my invention applied thereto, Fig. 4 is a detail perspective View of a portion of one of the floor members which'form the dump door frame, and having my invention applied thereto; and Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail sectional view of the engaging edges of the door and floor members. Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail sectional view of the engaging edges of the door member.
The great defect in cars for carrying grain and other loose commodities is the leakage at the hinge joints which-1s due to either poor fitting of the members of the hinge or want of stiffness, and consequently springing of the door or door frame, and in order to overcome this defect I attach to the door a member 2 having one edge curved as at 3 to embrace and be fastened upon a rod 40, and a series of preferably three slots, 7 through this member 2, in the circumferential line of the curved edge 3. The floor member to which the door is hinged is in dicated at i and forms a side of the hopper mouth of the car, and this floor member has fastened rigidly thereto a plate 5 extending the full length thereof and having a series of tongues 6 corresponding in number to the slots 7 in the member 2, such tongues being curved to, when passed through the slots, clasp the rod 4 with a snug sliding fit and at the same time have a snug sliding contact with the walls of the slots. These members 2 and 5 are preferably formed with flanges 10 for the purpose of supplementing the members in stiffening the door and floor member.
With this device for hinging the dumpdoor leakage is prevented when the door is closed and supporting its load by the plate 2 being drawn into tight contact with the plate 5, the passage of the tongues through the slots permitting of this, while, when the car is being discharged, and the door acts as a chute, the close fit between the tongues and the walls of the slots eli'cctively prevent leakage. This close fitting relation between the tongues and walls of the slots is maintained practically indefinitely owing to the fact that there are no bearing points in the contiguous edges of these parts at the top of the door; and it is mainly due to the fact that the plate members 2 and 5 extend continuously from end to end of the door and intimately meet along the full length thereof that an effective grain-tight joint is provided.
If desired, when'relatively heavy metalis used for the door, the slots may be cut directly therein instead of in a separate member as shown, without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim is as follows 1.- In a car for containing loose commodities, in combination with a grain discharging door-frame, and a door therefor, of a hinge connecting the door to the door-frame and extending continuously from end to end ofthe hinged edge of the door, and consisting of a air of plate members connected respective y to the door and door-frame and each having a stiffening flange extending throughout the length thereof.
2. In a car for containing loose commodities, in combination with a grain discharging door-frame, and a door therefor, of a hinge connecting the door to the door-frame and extending continuously from end to end of the hinged edge of the door, and con sisting of a pair of plate members connected respectively to the door and door frame,
of the hinged edge of the door, and consisting of a pair of plate members connected respectively to the door and door-frame, each having a stifl'ening flange extending throughout the length thereof, and one plate 15 member having a plurality of tongues and the other a plurality of slots With the tongues passed therethrough, and a rod fixed upon the door and engaged by the tongues,
and the slotted edge of the door being curved 20 and clasping the said rod.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
RICHARD BURNETT.
