To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. .Io-NES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fuse-Retainers, of which the following is ay specification.
The general object of the invention is to keep the strain olf the point of connection between a blasting cartridge and a fuse while such cartridge is held suspended by the fuse, as in the act of lowering the cartridge into a hole, or when the charge is arranged in such other position as might resultin the accidental disengagement of the fuse from the cartridge. Andto this endthe invention resides in embodying an anchor' in the explosive material, `located within the cartridge, extending one" end portion of this anchor beyond one end of the cartridge and adapting this said end portion of the anchor to be adjusted onto a portion of thefuse farther from the end of the cartridge than the said end portion of the anchor, whereby to have that `portion of theV fuse between the anchor and the end ofthe cartridge slack, and the weight of theca'rtridge thrown onto the anchor whenthefcartridge is suspended by the portion ofthe fuse located beyond the anchor.

The fuse holder herein indicated generally by a comprises an engaging end 5, an attaching end 6 and a body portion connecting the ends 5 and 6 and indicated by 7.
The length of the body portion 7 will be so proportioned with respect to the length of the cartridge `with which it is to be connected, as to admit of having a considerable portion of the said body 7 located within the cartridge and yet have the attaching end spaced for a considerable distance from one end of the cartridge when the device is in Specification of Letters Patent.

use. Therefore, the length of the holder a may be greater if so desired, than the length of the cartridge herein indicated by S. By havingV the lengths of the cartridge and holder proportioned as just stated or as Vshown in the drawings, the engaging end 5 may be arranged at the bottom of the cartridge 8 and a more eifective anchoring of the holder had than there would be if the attaching end were arranged nearer the top of the cartridge. It will, of course, be understood, however, that for purposes of my invention it is immaterial as to the distance which the engaging end may be spaced from the lower end of the cartridge when the device is in use.
In assembling my device with a cartridge such as indicated at S and to have the various parts in the relative positions shown in the drawings, the engaging end 5 is introduced into the shell while the same isempty andl brought to a point adjacent to the lower end ofthe said shell when the same is positioned as viewed in the drawings. When the holder is so positioned the upper or attaching end portion G thereof will be beyond the upper end of the shell. The explosive material is then introduced into the shell in the ordina-ry. manner and packed around the portion ofthe body 7 located within the shell after which the upper end of the shell is sealed, thus the cartridge is completed. The
engaging end 5 may be of any construction that will prove eiective in preventing the easy withdrawal of the body 7 fro-m the material in `which it is embedded, preferably the said engaging end 5 will be greater in diameter-than the diameter of the body 7.
VNow the said body 7 and engaging end 5 may be formed of any material found suitable for the purpose and may be either rigid,
semi-rigid, or flexible. Acheap and effective material for forming the body 7 and Vengaging end 5 is found to be stout twine.. With this substance the engaging end may be conveniently formed by tying several knots in one end of the twine after the same has been doubled.
The attaching end 6 may be formed of any material found suitable for the purpose, as fiber. InV the present instance, this attaching end 6 is shown in the form of an oblong plate with an opening 9 at one end thereof Vto facilitate its attachment to the body 7 which attachment may be readily effected by passing one end of the body through the opening 9 and then passing the engaging end 5 between the doubled twine.
10 and 11 indicate openings in the plate forming the attaching end, which openings are of a size to effect a slight contraction of a piece of ordinary powder fuse, such as is shown at 12 in Fig. l of the drawings, when the said fuse is laced through these openings, as shown. By having the said openings 10` and 11 so proportioned to the cross sectional area of the fuse as to slightly contract that portion of the fuse disposed in the openings, the said attaching end will frictionally bind on the fuse, and further by disposing the openings and lacing the fuse therethro-ugh as shown, slipping of the said fuse will be prevented when the cartridge isy held suspended thereby or when the fuse is given an ordinary pull.
Now when the 4fuse is laced through the attaching plate and one end of the fuse inserted into the upper end of the cartridge 8 and the attaching plate adjusted to a point on the fuse which is farther fromthe top of the cartridge than is the lower opening 11 when the parts are positioned as shown in Fig. 1, then the weight of the cartridge will be on the attaching plate and a portionof the fuse beyond the said plate when the cartridge is suspended, as before stated.
lVith the form shown in Fig. 2 the conducting wires 13 and 14 extending from the detonator 15 embedded in the cartridge, are wrapped around the attaching plate 6 after having been passed through the lower opening 11 thereof, and thence directed thro-ugh the upper opening 10 and to a source of electric energy and a suitable-controlling-device (not shown).
Vhat is claimed as new is:
1. In combination, a cartridge,a fuse an a fuse holding device, the said fuse having one end directed into one end of the cartridge and the said holding device having'one end directed into the same end of the cartridge as the fuse and its opposite end adjustably connected to the fuse. .a
2. In combination, a cartridge, and a fuse holding device, the said holding device having one end directed into one end of the cartridge and its opposite end portion pro,- Vided with openings, and a fuse laced through the openings of the holding device and directed intothe same end of the cartridge as the holding device.
3. In combination, a cartridge, and a holding device, the said holding device having one end directed into the cartridge shell and surrounded by the explosive material within the shell and its o-pposite end provided with a plate adapted for attachment to a fuse. Y
4:. In combination, a cartridge, and a fuse holding device, the said fuse holding device comprising a body having one end directed into one end of the cartridge shell and into the explosive material within the shell, means associated with this last-named end of the body and coacting with the explosive material within the shell to prevent the withdrawal of the body, and an attaching plate` at the opposite end of the body and adapted to be adjustably connected to a fuse.
5. A. fuse holder for cartridges, comprising a body portion having an engaging 'end and an attaching end, the former being adapted ,to be connected to a cartridge and the latter to be adjustably connected to a fuse. v
6. A fuse holder for cartridges, comprising a flexible body portion having an engaging end and an attaching end, the former being adapted to be connected to a cartridge and Athe latter to be adjustably connected to a fuse.
