GILBERT CULLEN, OF LELAND, ILLINOIS.
END-GATE.
Application filed September 19, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GILBERT CULLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leland, in the county of Lasalle and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in End-Gates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in farm wagons.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of an attachment for the wagon including an improved end gate construc tion, and means for operating the said gate whereby the discharge of the material from the wagon may be regulated.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a wagon of the above mentioned character comprising separable side forming members and operating means whereby the end gate and separable side forming members are simultaneously drawn into effective engagement with the bottom and fixed side members respectively of the wagon to provide a tight joint between the parts.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an attachment of the above men tioned character, which is simple in C011 struction and which may be readily and easily attached to the wagon body when desired.
lVith these and other objects in view which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the invention consists in the combination and specific construction of the parts which will hereinafter be more fully described.
In the drawing forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is an underneath perspective view of the wagon body. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the wagon body slightly tilted and showing the end gate partly open. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the attachment.
Referring to the drawing by numerals 1 designates the wagon body of the ordinary well known construction, comprising a bottom 2 and sides 3. Adjacent the opposite ends and secured to the inner surface of the sides 8 are vertically disposed spaced cleats 4L and 5 between which the front and rear end pieces 6 and 7 are slidably fitted.
The attachment forming the subject matter of my invention includes a pair of separable side forming members 8 seated upon Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 19, 191 4. Serial No. 790,721.
the upper edge of the sides 3 and extending throughout the entire length thereof to increase the capacity of the wagon. Secured 1n any suitable manner to the outer face of the members 8 and depending below the lower edges thereof are posts 9 the lower ends of which are received by substantially U-shaped re aining members 10 which prevent the lateral displacement of said side fornnng members 8. Each of the said rctaining members 10 has laterally disposed flanges 11 through which extend suitable fastening elements 12 securing the said members 10 to the sides 3 adjacent the upper edges thereof. Adjacent: their forward end the members 8 are provided with vertically disposed spaced cleats 13 and 14 between which and the cleats i and an end piece 15 is slidably fitted. Arranged transversely between the said members 8 and passed through the cleats 14-. is a brace rod 16 fastened to the members 8 by the nuts 16.
The end gate forming a portion of the attacl'urn-mt is indicated at 17 and. controls the discharge of the material from the wagon, it being understood that when the attachment is used the rear end piece 6 is removed. The end gate is provided adjacent its opposite side edges with vertically disposed reinforcing cleats 1S and 19 which are secured thereto in any suitable manner and adj accnt their upper ends bearing blocks 20 and 21 through which and the members 8 the pivot rod 22 is passed for swingingly supporting the end gate 17, the opposite ends of the rod being threaded for the reception of the nuts It is thus apparent that the gate 17 is pivoted adjacent its upper edge and adapted for swinging i'novenient outwardly when the wagon is tilted to dis charge the material and with a view of regulatiug the degree of opening of the gate 1 provide a means which will presently be described. Secured to the under side of the bottom 2 adjacent the rear end and at oppo site longitudinal edges thereof are reinforcing cleats 24; and 25 upon which are secured in any suitable manner bearing blocks 26 and 27 in which are journaled the shaft 28. The opposite ends of the shaft project be yond the blocks 26 and 27 and are provided with a ratchet wheel 29 arranged adjacent one of said blocks. The free ends of the shaft are squared whereby the detachable crank handle 30 may be connected with said shaft for rotating the same. A pawl 31 is pivoted to one side edge of the bottom above said ratchet and adapted to cooperate with the latter to prevent rotation of the shaft when desired. Secured to the end gate and adjacent the lower edge thereof are spaced eyes 32 which have connected therewith by means of snap hooks 33 one end of the chains 3% and 3a, the opposite ends of said chains being connected with the shaft 28 whereby the chains are wound around the shaft when the latter is rotated in one direction to move the said end gate to closed position. A strip of sheet iron 35 extends across the lower edge of the gate to prevent the chains from cutting thereinto. A guide strip 36 is secured to the rear ends of the cleats 2a and 25 in spaced relation to the bottom 2 and under which the chains pass to the shaft.
It will be manifest that by reason of the connection between the side forming members S and the end gate 17 that when the shaft is rotated to move the latter to closed position that the side forming members 8 are drawn downwardly into effective engagement with the stationary sides 3 so as to provide a perfectly tight joint between the Darts.
In use when it is desired to unload the material, the wagon body may be tilted by any suitable means. The crank handle 30 is then connected with the shaft 28 after which the pawl 31 is swung out of engagementwith the ratchet wheel 29 whereby the weight of the material to be discharged forces the end gate open causing the shaft to rotate in one direction and unwind the chain thereon. The rotation of the shaft in this direction is controlled by the operator by means of the crank handle 30 whereby the end gate may be retarded in its movement outwardly to open position so as to regulate the discharge of the material. The shaft when rotated in an opposite direction causes the chains 3% and 3st to wind upon the shaft, which in turn draws the end gate 17 to closed position, and which is held against movement by the pawl and ratchet mechanism.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it will be apparent that I have provided an attachment of simple construction and by means of which the ordinary well known form of wagon may be converted into a grain wagon and provided with means whereby the discharge of grain may be regulated on unloading the same in farm or commercial elevators.
lVhile I have shown and described the end gate construction as forming a portion of the attachment, or in other words used in conjunction with the separable side forming members it is to be understood that the said end gate may be mounted between the stationary sides of the ordinary well known form of wagon and used in a manner and to the same advantages hereinabove described. It is to be further understood that while I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, that I am not to be limited to the precise construction and variousarrangement herein shown as changes may be made within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. The combination with a wagon box, having fixed side boards, of supplemental side boards removably supported thereon, an end gate pivoted adj acentits upper edge to said supplemental side boards, and means for controlling the movements of said gate and simultaneously drawing said supple mental boards into effective engagement with said fixed boards of the wagon on closing movement of the gate.
2. The combination with a Wagon box having fixed side boards, of supplemental side boards located above said fixed boards, an end gate carried by said supplemental boards for swinging movement, a windlass mounted on the under side of the bottom and adjacent the rear end of the wagon, anl a exible element connected with the Windlass and free end of the gate for controlling the movements of the latter and simultaneously drawing said supplemental boards into efiective engagement with the said fix-ed boards on closing movement of said gate.
3. The combination with a wagon box having fixed side boards, of supplemental side boards removably supported thereon, a swinging end gate carried by said supplemental boards, a windlass mounted on the under side of the bottom of the wagon, a flexible element connected with said wind-- lass and free end of said gate for controlling the movements of the latter, a guide element secured to the under side of said bottom rearwardly of the Windlass and adapted to guide said flexible element so as to draw the supplemental boards into effective engagement with said fixed boards simultaneously on movement of the gate to closed position, and a wear plate extending across the lower edge of the gate for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
