UNITED STATES SOLOMON F. BROWN, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
DUMPING-WAGON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 17, 1907.
Application filed April 19,1907. Serial No. 369,143.
I of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in
the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dumping-Wagons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same..
My invention relates to improvements in dumping wagons, and the object of my invention is to provide a simple dump wagon provided with a removable dumping box which can be applied to any truck or running gear of a wagon.
With this object in view, my invention consists in the construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings-Figure 1 represents a side view of my invention, the wheels being partly broken away. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the box proper. Fig. 3 is a detail view partly in section showing the ratchet wheel and pawl. Fig. 4 is a cross section of the dumping box in its closed position, and Fig. 5 is a similar view showing the box open.
a represents the pole, b the wheels, and c the spring seat, all of these being of the Ordinary construction.
01 represents the dumping box provided with a footboard 6. The front and rear ends of the box are inclined, as shown at f and 9, so as to direct all the material to the bottom of said box. In the bottom of the box is mounted a long steel rod 2', to which are attached by a plurality of hinges j, the bottom boards 7c and Z, which constitute the bottom of the wagon. A sheet of iron or steel m, triangular in cross-section, is secured in the bottom of the box over the rod 71 and hinges j to keep the material off from said rod and hinges. The bottom boards 70 and l are each provided with a plurality of rollers, such as 11, over which the securing chains 0 pass. At one end each of these chains is attached to an eye, such as p, and the other end runs over a spool or pulley, such as q, firmly fixed to the rod r, so that by turning said rod the chains will close up the dumping box. The rod r is mounted in a number of bearings s secured to the outside of the box, and on this rod is mounted a ratchet wheel 1. provided with a locking pawl a, so as to keep the box locked until it is desired to dump its contents.
Hinged doors 1) are provided one on each side of the box, secured by hinges x to the stationary part of the box, and each provided with a projection y at its lower end.
2 represents stops secured to the box on its inside, and preventing the swinging sides or doors from moving in too far. These stops 2 are cut away at the bot tom to allow the projecting portions g on the doors '0 to fit underneath them.
1 is a hand wheel fixed to the rod 1, by means of which the chains may be wound up, and the box changed from the position shown in Fig. 5 to that shown in Fig. 4.
The operation is as iollowsz-After the wagon has been loaded and transported to the desired place for unloading, previous to which the rod 9' is turned, bringing the parts into the position shown in Fig. 4, the pawl a is lifted, and the hand-wheel 1 turned to unwind the chains 0, whereupon the box assumes the position shown in Fig. 5, the side doors '0 being opened by the load. The load is therefore easily dumped, and the hand wheel then being turned restores the box to its original position, as shown in Fig. 4.
While I havethus described my invention, I wish it to be distinctly understood that I do not limit myself to the exact details shown and described, as these might be varied considerably, without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim 1. In a dumping wagon, the combination with wheels and supporting means, of a dumping box, said box being provided with hinged sides and bottom boards, chains run ning around said box, and means for winding up said chains and holding them when wound up, thus holding the box in a closed position, substantially as described.
2. The combination with wheels and supporting means, of a dumping box, said box being provided with hinged sides and hinged bottom boards, each of said bottom boards being provided with a roller, chains passing around the sides and bottom, and a rod carrying pulleys or spools to which said chains are secured, said rod being provided -with a hand-wheel, and means for fastening said rod against rotation, substantially as described.
3. A dumping box provided with hinged sides and hinged bottom boards, and a shield over the central part of said bottom boards, said bottom boards being each provided with a plurality of rollers, chains passing around said box, a rotatable rod carrying pulleys or spools to which the said chains are attached, a hand-wheel secured to said rod, and a pawl and ratchet for securing said rod against rotation, substantially as described.
I. A dumping box having an open top and inclined ends at the front and rear and being also provided with hinged sides and means to limit the inward movement 01 said sides, said box being also provided with swinging bottom boards, each carrying a pulley, and a triangular guard over the center of said bottom boards, combined with a rotatable rod secured to the side of said box, pulleys fastened to said rod, chains fastened to said pulleys and running around the sides and bottom of said box and having their outer ends secured, a hand-wheel mounted on said rod, and a pawl and ratchet for preventing the rotation of said rod in one direction, substantially as described.
5. A dumping box rectangular in its general shape and having inclined front and rear ends, said box being pro vided with hinged sides and hinged bottom boards, each of said sides being provided with a projecting strip along its lower edge, stops secured to said box preventing the in ward movement of said sides beyond a predetermined distance, a triangular shield located above the central part of said bottom boards, said bottom boards being each provided with a plurality of rollers, in combination with a 1'0- tatable rod carried on the side of said box, pulleys mounted on said rod, chains secured to said pulleys and passing over the rollers on the bottom boards, the other ends of said chains being secured, a hand-Wheel mounted on said rod, and a pawl and ratchet for preventing movement of said rod in one direction, substantially as de 10 scribed.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
