The particular battery for which my improvement has been designed contains more than sixty of these retorts. Each retortis between walls 2l containing longitudinal series of vertical heating dues 22 rising from a base containing upwardly-tapering nozzles 23, one at the bottom of each fine; and each due contains a short' air -tube 24; to one side and rising above the nozzle to take the heated air through an openin Q5 in said base and mix it at an elevation aoove the respective nozzle with the gas that is introduced into the line. Each row of flues 22 has extending underneath it in` the aforesaid base., a gas-passage 2G. from which the nozzles 23 are fed, this passage being closed at each end by a species of nozzle known in the art as a gun` 27. ri'he lues 22'in eac-h row discharge at their upper ends into a horizontal passage 29 in a superstructiue containing a horizontal passage 28 communicating with the passage 29 thro-ugh opening 29a lining` with the lues S22 and cap-covered lines 30 extending with the openings 29a.
