EXTENSION-BED.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH Renown, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension-Beds, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in extension beds; and the object of my invention is to provide a bed of this general character, of a simple and inexpensive nature and of a durable construction which shall be capable of being speedily adjusted to accommodate one or more persons.

In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views: Figure 1, shows a perspective view of an extension bed embodying my invention. Fig. 2, is a fragmentary sectional View showing the arrangement of the bars and tubes. Fig. 3, is a sectional detail disclosing the arrangement of the rack bars and the tubular housing.

In my present invention I provide a bed especially adapted to be used by hotel keepers, though the same is also adapted to the needs of the home and such other places where the likelihood exists that bed accommodations must be speedily prepared at short notice to accommodate additional. or unexpected people.

In carrying out the object of my invention, I provide a bed including a head and a foot section which are constructed alike except that the head section is somewhat higher than the foot section, though both sections may be alike.

In the drawings, the letter A represents the head and B the foot of an extension bed including my invention. Each section, as shown, comprises two posts 1 and 2, each post at the lower end having a caster 3, and near the end being provided with a recessed head 4. Within the recesses 5 of these heads are arranged to seat the tenons of the side bars. Extending at right angles from each head 1 is a rack bar 8, the rack teeth being upon the under surface or lower edge, as shown in Fig. 3. The upper edge of each rack bar has a kerf 21, as shown in Fig. 3.

Each head and foot gives support to a Specification of Letters Patent.

grille. These grilles are alike and are made of tubes and bars alternately disposed in horizontalv position. As shown, the upper member 9 of the head section 1 is in the form of a bar, while the upper section 10 of the remaining member of this section is in the form of a tube. The lower member 11 of the section 1 is a tube, however, while the opposite lower member 19. is a bar. As shown, each tube and bar is connected to a vertical rod 13, and branching laterally from each vertical rod in horizontal spaced relation are the tubes 1% and bars 15, alternately arranged. As described, the head A has six tubes and the foot B four tubes, into which the opposite bars telescope. Each upper tube 10 is provided with a set screw 16. WVhile the bars of one section are held within the tubes of the opposite section, the rack bars 8 are slidably held and telescope into a square tubular open-ended housing 19. Two such housings are used and each near each end has an offset 20, :t'orming a boxing, as shown in Fig. The rack bars are secured within the housings by nieans of the set screws 26, which work into the kerfs or grooves 21.

As disclosed in Fig. 3, each boxing presents a smooth inner cylindrical surface, which forms a bearing for the ".101: heads 22, by means of which the bars are adjusted. Each head 22 has an extending operating crank 23 ending in a handle 2. To carry the racks and connected bed structure inward or outward, it is simply necessary to insert a rack head into the boxing and rotate the same. In Figs. 1 and 3, I have shown two crank pinions, though it is of course understood that but one is required.

As described, the tubular housings 19 form independent and detached parts. The racks 8 slide freely within the housings and are secured by means of the set screws 26.

It is of course understood that the head and foot portions can be made in various designs.

When the racks are fully within their housings 19, there is provided what is called a single bed. However, in rotating a pinion to actuate a rack outward, the bed is enlarged upon that side. In carrying the rack bars outward upon both sides, the bed is enlarged to its fullest capacity and in doing this we have what is called a double bed.

In connection with my bed structure, a

set of springs is necessary which must also be capable of being expanded or enlarged and it is also of course necessary that the mattress is capable of being enlarged.

A bed constructed according'to my invention is simple and inexpensive and both durable and efficient in operation, and the bed can be instantly adjusted to enlarge or decrease its size.

Having thus described my said invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:

1. The combination in an extension bed, of a head and a foot section each comprising two similar members each member including a post having a plurality of laterally extending bars and tubes alternately arranged and held in parallel spaced relation the bars of one member telescoping into the tubes of the opposite member, each post having a recessed head and an integral outstanding rack bar with the teeth upon the lower edge, a housing for each head and foot section, said rack bars being slidably' held within said housings, each housing near each end having an outstanding boxing, a pintle within each boxing, a pinion upon each pintle meshing with a rack bar, and a crank to engage said pintles.

2. The combination with an extension bed, of a footseotion and a head section, each comprising two similar members each member including a post having a' plurality of laterally extending bars and tubes alternately arranged and held in parallel spaced relation the bars of one member telescoping into the tube of the opposite member, each post having an integral outstanding rack bar with teeth upon the lower edge, a housing for each head "and foot section; said rack bars arranged to slide Within said housings, each housing near each end having an outstanding boxing presenting a smooth eylindrioal inner surface, anda crank having a pinion head arranged to fit into and rotate within said outstanding boxings and engaging the teeth of said rack bars.
