Description

F. B. JAGOBSON. DRINKING FOUNTAIN. APPLICATION FILED NOV. 10, 1913. 71 Patented May 12,1914.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK B. JACOBSON, OF HUMBOLDT, IOWA.
DRINKING-ECU NTAIN.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK B. JACOBSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Humboldt, in the county of Humboldt and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drinking- Fountains, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in stock fountains and more particularly to a trough with means for quickly thawing the ice formed therein in cold periods of the year and the primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will always be in use both during warm and cold seasons.
A further object of the invention resides in providing a trough or tank, the bottom of which is provided with a V-shaped groove within which a heating medium may be placed and a still further object resides in providing a device which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very efficient and useful in operation.
l/Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specifications and claim.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinalsection through the device. Fig. 2 is a transverse section therethrough. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. at is a fragmentaryperspective View of one end of the device showing the damper plate removed. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the damper plate removed.
In describing my invention, I shall refer to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which- 1 indicates a tank or trough, composed of a bottom 2, and side and end Walls 3 and 4, respectively. These walls may be formed integral with the bottom, or otherwise, as desired. The bottom .2 of the device is corrugated, or offset centrally to provide an inverted V-shaped rib extending the full length thereof, said rib being of any desired height whatsoever. The space inclosed be tween the walls of this rib under the bottom Specification of Letters Patent.

of the device, forms a means whereby a heating medium may be applied and within this space a fire is preferably built in cold seasons to prevent the water in the tank or trough from freezing or to thaw the ice which is already formed in said tank.
In order to convey the products of combustion and the like from the space inclosed within the walls of the V-shaped rib, below the bottom of the device, to a point beyond the tank, a flue 5 is provided, the same having an inverted V-shaped extension 6, which is fitted under the V-shaped rib at one end of the tank. \Vhen so positioned, the flue is held in an upright position with respect to the tank at one end thereof and a damper 7 is hingedly secured to the opposite end wall of the tank to cover the open end formed by the rib at the last mentioned end of the device. This damper is normally disposed in its closed position to cover the opening at this end of the device and the smoke, soot and other products of combustion will pass to one end of the device and escape through the flue provided for this purpose.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that there has been provided a simple structure wherein water may be kept in a liquid state during the cold months experienced in some parts of the country and wherein the water may be thawed if frozen. It will further be noted that the device with slight modification is equally adapted for use during months wherein its heating qualities are unnecessary.
lVhile I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
Having thus described this invention, what is claimed is In a device of the class described, a trough, the bottom thereof being struck-up and bent to form an inverted V-shaped rib extending the full length thereof, the space included between the walls of this V-shaped rib affording means for the reception of a heating medium therein, a flue having an opening in one side adjacent the bottom thereof, an inverted V-shaped projection secured to the flue over the opening in the bottom thereof and projecting laterally therefrom, said inthe trough to cover the adjacent end of the verted V-shaped projection being adapted to aforesaid space in the bottom thereof. 1 be received Within the space inolosed by the In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my inverted l-shaped rib in the trough at one signature in the presence of two Witnesses.

mating means between the aforesaid space Vitnesses:
and the inverted extension of the flue, and a F. A. AYERS, hinged plate carried at the opposite end of l CARL F. FLEMMIG,
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. C.
