' Specification of Application filed April 1,
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, JAMES H. LATHROP,3. citizen of the United States, residing at OxfordJunction, in the county of Jones and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stock-Waterers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to ments in stock waterers I of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the water within the drinking trough is prevented from freezing, and which will also serve to maintain the water in good drinking conditionin a low atmospheric temperature.
The invention consists in the details of certain improve construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved waterer whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my inventioirmay be the better understood, I will no-w'proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a fragmentary view partly in section and partly in elevationillustrating a stock waterer constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; and Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical. sectional view taken through the device as disclosed in Fig. 1.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a reservoir which may be a conventional barrel or the like having leading therefrom the vertically spaced pipes 2 and 2' the pipe 2 serving to deliver the water from within the reservoir 1 to the trough 3, while the upper pipe 2 serves as an overflow and conveys the water within the receptacle 9. secured within the reservoir 1' and in which is arranged the float 4 for controlling the valve 4 interposed in the pipe 2.
It is to be observed that the pipe 2 extends through opposite face walls of the receptacle 9 and thereby affords an efiective means for and it is an object 1916. Serial No. 88,381.
maintaining said receptacle in operative position, especia ly in view of the fact that one of said walls of the receptacle is adapted to contact with a wall of the reservoir 1.
The lower portion of the casing C is formed into a reservoir R adapted to contain a supply of oil, and 5 denotes a burner carried by the upper face of the reservoir It, said burner 5 being of a conventional type and adapted to afford a means whereby the water within the trough 3 may be maintained at a predetermined temperature above the freezing point.
It is to be noted that one end of the casing C between the reservoir R and the trough 3 is open'and said open end is adapted to be closed by the hinged door 6 movable in a vertical plane and maintained in closed position through the medium of the latch 7. It is also to benoted that the reservoir R has its top provided with a filling vent 8 positioned in close proximity to the open end of the casing C.
It will be perceived that the hinged door 6 permits convenient ingress within the compartment afforded between the reservoir R and the trough 3 for the purpose of controlling the burner 5 R and also serves as a means for controlling the heat within the interposed compartment.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a waterer constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.
I claim:
In combination with a reservoir, a trough, an inclosed receptacle within the reservoir and in contact with a wall thereof, a pipe leading from the trough and in communication with the reservoir, said pipe being disposed through the receptacle and affording a orfilling the reservoir supporting means for the receptacle, a pipe in communication with the trough and'the receptacle and positioned above the first named pipe, a valve interposed. in the first named pipe and arranged Within the recep tacle, and a float positioned Within the re ceptacle for controlling the valve. .1
In testimony whereof hereto a'liixv my signature in'the presence of two Witnesses.
JAMES H LATHROP.
