Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE. N
WALTER A. LAWTON, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN FEED MECHANISMS FOR CARDING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 109,634, dated November 29, 1870.
To all 'whom "it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, VALTER A. LAWTON, of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Carding-Ma-V chines, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in Which- Figurel represents a plan or top view of my improved attachment. Fig. 2 is an end View of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention has for its object to provide an attachment to the feed mechanism for cardin gen gines, whereby the sliver is properly kept on the aprons after having been spread on the same by the traverse.
The Vinvention consists in the application, for that purpose, of ixed bars or arms A A, which are secured to a shaft, B, and made to rest on the sliver at the sides of the frame, and in the middle, if desired. The shaft B is supported on the frame of the machine, and is held stationary thereon. The arms A A, which can be made of metal or other suitable material, with smooth lower edges, and rounded at the lower ends, are adjustably secured to the shaft, they being held in place by setscrews a a, as shown.
The arms are set the requisite distance apart, and then locked. Their lower edges rest on the sliver that is passed by the aprons toward the carding mechanism, and serve to hold the sliver down, so that the same may be prevented from bulging and rising up, and to deliver itinto the carding-maehine uniformly and evenly.
The drawing shows but two arms, A, for the extremities of the machine. Any suitable larger number may, however, be employed.
Heretofore carding-machines have been provided with complex rotating devices for the same purpose as my attachment. The same were, however, expensive and very diiiicult to keep in proper repair.
The dotted lines in Fig. l illustrate the ordinary arrangement of feeding-aprons.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The stationary arms A A, applied lo the shaft B for holding the sliver down upon the aprons of a carding-inachine, substantially as herein shown and described.
WALTER A. LAWTON.
