MAGHINE POR STRETG'HING FABRICS. 'I No. 259,036; Y Patented June6,1882.

MACHINE FR STRETCHING FABRICS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of vLetters Patent No. 259,036, dated June 6, 1882, Application filed November 1, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. MILLER,
of Woonsocket, Providence county, Rhode Island, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Stretching Cloth, of which the following is a specification. My invention relates to that class of apparatus used for stretching fabrics; and it consists in the peculiar construction -oft'lle stretching reel or cylinder and its adjuncts, whereby I am enabled to stretch shawls and other fabrics which require careful manipulation and cannot, without injury, be subjected to the action of roughened stretching-surfaces.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved stretching apparatus. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional plan; Fig. 3, a crosssection on the line 1 2, Fig. 2, looking in theY direction of the arrow l.
.Upon the fixed shaft A- revolves the reel or cylinder B, composed of any suitable number of disks a a and longitudinal connecting-bars b, forming a light open cylindrical cage. Upon the shaft A are fixed inclined arbor-s D, on which turn Wheels E, the radial arms d of which extend through the spaces between `the bars b, and from each arm projects a sharppointed pin, c. The arbors D are so set that the wheels E are inclined toward each other at one side, as shown, and the fabric X is presented to the cylinder at that point where the peripheries of the wheels are nearest and leaves the cylinder at the point where they are far thest separated. As the fabric is presented to the cylinder the pins e penetrate the same, and as the fabric is drawn forward the cylinder and wheels revolve, the pins gradually separate,
and the fabric is'slretched until i t reaches the point Where it is withdrawn. As the pins are at the edge, -it will not be injured in stretching, the bars a piesenting but a small surface,
widths, I secure the arbors D by` set-screws s adj ustably to the shaft, the slatted cylinder permitting the wheels to be set at any required distance apart without affecting their relative action.
Other means of adjusting the wheels may be employed.
I claim- The combination, ina stretching-machine, of a cylinder, turning on a fixed shaft, A, and consisting oi'parallel disks a a and connecting longitudinal bars b, and wheels E, turning on inclined arbors D upon the shaft, and provided with arms extending between the bars and carrying points c, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereofl have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE W. MILLER. Witnesses:
