JAMEsLAWToN, or GLENH'AM, NEW YORK.
` Letters Patent No. 95,237, dated. September 28, k1869.
'-IWROVBMENT IN PEEDING--ATTAGHMENT POR CARDING--ENG-INE. a
The Schedule referred to in theserLetters Patent and making part of alle same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES LAWTON, of Glcnham,
in the county of Dutchess, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Feed-Attachment to Oarding-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description thereof,
which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, :reference being had to the accompanyforming part of this specification, in
Which-:- p

` Thisinvention relates to a new attachment to cardlng-machines, which is to be asubstitute 'for the ordinary strap heretofore 'in use. y
This strap, which is provided "with projecting prongs; and which has for its object to guide and carry forward the material -on the main feed-belt, is unreliable for the two following reasons: In the rst place, itis apt to slip' v on the rollers, and thereby faile y to effect. itspurpose; and in the next` place, it isv liable tohreak and to be carried between the feed-rollers, where it makes so much confusion that it is very troublesome to' be removed and replaced.'
u; The present invention consists in the employment j'frollers in place of the strap, said rollers having teeth, to carry the material on the feed-belt. They are geared together with the feed-roller, so that they must "remain in operation as long as said rollers are in aotion.
A, in the drawing, represents the feed-belt of the ordinary carding-machine. y
B B are .the feed-rollers ofthe same.
In front of the feed-rollers, and above the ends of the feed-belt, in the frame O, are hung three, or more o r less, rollers, D D, which 'have projecting prongs, a a
on their edges, and which are all ,hung on the same level.
'lrhese rollers carry toothed wheels, b` b, on their axles, said wheels being connected by pinions, c c, with each other and with the feed-rollers, so that the rollers D are all turned in the same direction, as indicated bythe arrows in g. 1.
A sheet-metal or other shield, E, is interposed between the gear-wheels and the feedbelt, to prevent the material from coming in contact with the gearing.
The rollers cannot get out of order, and cannot slip, Y so that they will be sure to operate satisfactorily.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A Y As an improvement upon the Apperly and Qlissola leed for carding-machines, the combination of the pronged rollers D, arranged on the same level, thel toothed wheels b b, pinions ce, and'shield E, all operating to move the roving to the card-cylinder, as and for the purpose specified.
