To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. Mn'rrnnws, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monticello in the county of Jones and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Woven-Wire Clamps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a woven wire clamp and has for its object the production of a simple means for clamping upon and supporting a wire fence.
Another object of this invention is the production of a plurality of plates which are adapted to be carried by one of the members which are adapted to reduce the wear upon the device and also for securely holding the sections in their correct position.
Vfith these and other objects in view, this invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the clamp. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detailed view of a portion of one of the sections. Fig. 1 is a perspective view of one of the plates. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of a portion of one of the sections illustrating how one of the bolts is supported thereby.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, it will be seen that there is provided a primary section 1 and an auxiliary section 2. The primary section 1 is provided with a plurality of transverse apertures 3 in which the bolts 4 are securely held. These bolts 1 are provided with threaded ends and in this manner each bolt is held firmly in engagement with the primary section 1. It will also be seen that a washer 5 may be positioned upon the bolt 4 so as to present a broad wearing surface to bear upon the primary section 1 whereby the head of the bolt 4: will be prevented from cut ting into this primary section 1. The auxiliary section 2 is provided with a plurality of enlarged openings 6, and a plurality of pockets 7 formed adjacent the lower portion of the enlarged opening 6. The thickened wearing plate 8 having a plurality of apertures 9 is positioned upon the auxiliary section 2 so as to allow the pocket portion 10 of the plate 8 to overhang the edges of the pockets 7. This plate 8 is held securely in position by means of the screws or other securing means 11 passing through the apertures 9.
W hen this clamp is used the bolts l are first passed through the woven wire at which time the auxiliary section 2 is positioned so as to allow the bolts to extend through the enlarged openings 6. The nuts 12 are then threadedupon the upper end of the bolts 4 so as to hold the auxiliary section in position. The auxiliary section 2 is then raised so as to allow the bolt 4 to pass down into the pockets 7 formed in the auxiliary mem ber 2 and to extend through the U-shaped pocket 10 of the wearing plate 8. The nuts 12 may then be tightened upon the bolts so as to bring the primary section 1 and auxiliary section 2 into binding engagement with the woven wire, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2.
By forming the wearing plate with a U- shaped pocket 10 the nut 12 will be prevented from wearing or digging into the auxiliary section 2, and in this manner cause the removal of the bolt 4: very diflicult, as this digging or wearing action would crowd the port-ion of the section adjacent the pocket 7 into the pocket 7 and bind the bolt in position. It will also be seen that it will not be necessary to form an even pocket 7 as the plate 8 will form an efficient means for supporting the bolt 4 and the nut 12 although the sides of the pocket 7 are positioned at a distance from the sides of the U-shaped pocket 7 of the plate 8, as illustrated in Fig. 3.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that a simple clamp has ben pro duced which will efficiently hold the strands 13 of the woven wire in a set position between the sections while on of the sections is provided with a simple means for preventing the wearing of the attaching means thereon, whereby the sections may be easily disengaged when desired.
