THOMAS HENRY PRUSHAW, OF FREDONIA, NEW YORK,
AssIeNoR TO TAYLOR, DAY & 00., OF SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 109,544, dated November 22, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARRIAGE-SPRINGS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
I, THOMAS HENRY PnUsnAw, of Fredolliit, in the county 01' Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buggy and \Vagon Springs, of which the following is a. specification.
Nature of the Invention.
This invention consists in the combination'ot the half-eliptieal side springs, with the slatted bottom springs as hereinafter described.- I
General Description.
The drawing represents it perspective view of my invention attached to part of a. buggy.
A Anre slatted wooden springs, which form the floor of the vehicle.
B B are half-elipticnl metallic side springs, having their ends attached to thc bolsters a a.
Two central cross-pieces b 11', passing underneath and secured to the bottom springs A A, connect the hnlf-eliptical side springs and bottom springs together by means of the bolts and stitfening tubes 0 e, or their equivalents, as clearly shown in the drzuving, being held at the top by block f.
The spaniel alvantages-ot this construction are, that the bottom springs will, of themselves, used alone, after awhile, sag down, and become nearly useless; but, by being connected with the side springs, they are stiffened and held up in place, while the side springs derive an equal benefit from the connection with the slats, which prevents too great an upward motion to the side springs, thus one spring equalizing the other.
Over 1'0n d1 roads this will be especially useful, where the common elipticul or lntlf-eliptical springs are objcetionztblo.
An undue elasticity, which produces bounding and rocking, is prevented by the two sets of springs, while at the sznnc time sullicient elasticity is retained to produce the desired clfect.
I claim as my invention s l The combination of the slotted springs A A, with the side springs B B', and the bend-blocks (la, for the purpose hcreiubelin-e specified.
2. The zn'rmigement of the slotted springs A A, eliptical side springs B B, central cross-bars b I), and connecting bolts and tubes 0 0, operating in the manner and for the purpose specified.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
