Patented May 5, 1914.v
To all whom t may concern Be it known thatI, T. Fien, la. citizen .of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in thecounty of Wayne and Stateof Michigan,.have invented certain new and useful VImprovements in Illu.

This invention relates'to an illuminated.
` license number for vehicles and more especial'ly to means for displaying, the license number'of a vehicle 'at either end thereof,
" Y both in daylight and atdark.
The invention consists in the 'matters hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view, partially in elevation 'and partially in section 'of a device thatA embodies Afeatures of the invention; and Fig. 2 .is a view in front elevation thereof.
vReferring to the drawings, a bracket 1 is secured at one end adjustably in a supporting clip 2 which may be turned into a plane whereby thebracket is held in upright Vposition when the supporting member is.
fastened onv an axle or horizontal part indicatedfiat 3, or may be made to hold the bracket in upright. lposition when fastened sired, through the front of the A frame 10 is ,adapted to frictionally engage` and interlock with the open end of the ca'fsing. The frame is ornamental in design and is provided withan inner holder 16 which is Lshaped in cross. section ,with the vertical flangethereof provided with a beadv17 that engages the inner of the frame and adds rigidity to the same'.
in the holder against the vertical iange thereof and saidplate is cut away, as at 12 to provide letters, gures or other appropriate design. A sheet 13 of a translucent material' and of a color in contrast with that 'of the outer plate 11 is removably secured in the holder 16 at the back of the plate 11'.- A transparent plate 14, of any preferred color, backs the translucent plate 13, all three plates being maintained in position by --a stop 15 in close sliding engagement with the frame 10. The stop 15 1s Lshaped in cross section and the vertical flange thereof engages and retains the plates within the holder. As a result of this construe# tion, an illuminated license number is obtained which may be secured at either end of the vehicle to either an upright or horizontal portion thereof and which when so' secured showst-he design or number clearly either in daylight or when illuminated for night use.
Obviously, changes inthe details of construction -may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention and I do An' opaque' plate- 11 is removably mounted not care to limit myselfto any particular form or arrangement of parts.
In an 'illuminatedlicense number for vehicles, a reflector, a frame carried thereby, a holder arranged in said frame and having a vertical flange providedvwith a bead .Ven-A gaging the inner edge -of said fram'e,`an
opaque sign plate arranged against the ver# tical flange of' said holder and having openings therein in the form of characters, a translucent plate arranged against the back ofsaid opaque plate, a trans arent plate arranged against the back o said translucent plate, anda stop detachably mounted in said holder and having a vertical ange engaging said, transparent plate to retain all vofsaid plates within said holder.
