,Application led August 3, 1922,. Serial 170.579,345.
Ta all' whom t concern:
Be it known that ADOLF Juntosv WEST- MAN, .a-citizen of the United States, residingV I 'at Montreal, in 'the District of Montreal andProvince :ofi Quebec, Canada, has invented certain ynew and useful Improve- `ments in Map-Display Devices, of which the p l following is a speciiication.'
Thejpresent invention` relates` to `a display 'device vadapted particularly for maps I of web or strip form` and more particularly a. web or stri relates to a device for exhibiting and operating themap particularly during travel.
An object of the present invention is. to providea device of this character which i maybe readily l,attached to a 'motor vehicle in position to be rread and operated and adjusted.;. and a device which interchangeably carries maps whichv may be qulckly and easily inserted and removed from the devlce and connected to the operatlng parts thereof. f 4. v
Another object of the inventionis to provide a'gdi'splay device of this character which may be operated in either direction to cause to" move in the desired d1- rection according tothe direction of travel v of the vehicle betweenpredetenninedpoints lso that the web or map may be exposed and moved continuously or intennittentlyfor uncovering-toview consecutive portionsof the map and to show direction, distance and condition of roadsand the of the vehicle.
like tothe operator The invention also aims lat the provision g of a relatively simply constructed device lwhich may vbe. for the most part stamped and formed from sheet metal and which may be economically andy easily assembled into a composite structure, which occuples but relatively small spaceand which may be mounted upon the windshield or other convenient location upon the vehicle within easy reachof the operator and also within the line of vision. y
With the foregoing and other `objects in view, the invention will be more fully described hereinafter, and will be more particularly pointed out in the claim appended In the drawings, wherein like symbols refer to like or corresponding parts throughout the several views.

vention and having a map ,strip or rweb of thecasing and the map strip removed.
Figure Sis a longitudinal section taken through the complete devicesubstantially on the line 3--3 of Figure 1, and
Figure 4 is an end elevation of the device, showing one type of bracket which may be 'used for attaching the device upon a motor vehicle.
Referring to the drawing, l designates a 'casing which is relatively shallow and of rectangular form, and which may be constructed of sheet metal or the like. The casing is open at oneside and is lnormally closedby a cover `11 having a. marginal flange 12 adapted to overlap the casing 10 vand which may be detachably secured thereto in any suitable manner. In the present instance the cover 11 is held to the casing by a projection 13 which is stamped and pressed outwardly from one end of the'casing and adapted to engage in an opening 14 formedin the ange 12 of the cover. The other end of the cover is held to the casing by a latch stud 15 carried on a leaspring 16 which is riveted at 17 to the inner side of thecasing 10, the stud 15 projecting outwardly through registering openings formed in the casing 10 and flange 12. The spring 16 may be flexed inwardly by a push button 18 carried by the spring 16 at a point below the flange 12, and which extends outwardly through the casing 10 for easy access, the depression of the button-18 being adapted to retract the stud 15 from the ilange 12 The-casing 10 i is `provided with a longitudinally extending filler or bed plate 19 which. extends longitudinally within the casing beneath the cover 11 and which has its opposite ends bent downwardly and outwardly to provide walls 2O which are spaced from the opposite ends of the casing to form therewith compartments for spools 21 and 22. The out-turned ends of the walls are secured to the bottom of the casing 10 for firmly holding the plate 19 in position. The cover 11 is provided with a transparent panel 23 of glass or the like which is intermediate the ends of the cover and of sufficient width to fully expose a map strip or web 25 which is adapted to be moved over the plate 19. The spools 21 and 22 carry adjacent ends of the connected to the spools or turning the 'latter by transverse keys or Webs 29. carried onl ltheshats 28 and engaging in kerfs 30 ormedn'the adjacent ends of 'thespools The outer ends/of theshaits 28Emay, be provided with any suitable means for turning ther shafts, in the 'present mstance knurled thumb wheels'31 being shown.- 'Y
The spools 21 and 22 are provided intermediate their ends with transverse slots 32 arranged to vreceive the ends of the web 25 and by means of Which the web maybe easily and vquickly attached to the spools.'
For .supporting thecasing 10` the latter may .be providedfwith a` socket. or strap `33 at its under side to receive theshank 3fty of a bracket-arm 35 which, as shown lin Figure 4', maybe adj ustably clamped upon` a Asecond bracket '36 b-y a bolt or screw 37. The bracket 36 may be given anyv suitable con-1 figuration for attachln lit to the part of the motor vehicle upon vw ich theldevice is 'to i be'sup-ported, 'a bolt or screw 37 may be 'used for'holding the second bracket 35 at they desired. angle upon the first bracket to tilt the casing 10fso as' to face the operatori and to facilitate access to'l the wheelsl and vthe button 18!" It isappar'ent thatthe spools-21and 22 may be driveninany suitable manner, first one 'spool ybeing operated'to wind the web 25 thereon and draw the web across the plate 19 and beneath the `transparent panel 25 'so that the web may be observed by the operator-` If it is desired to reverse rthe motion of the web 25, the opposite spool is' turned to` wind the web thereon, the first webbeing left free to turn under tension*2 of its spring 27 for maintaining'V the -web taut; When it is desired to remove a spool from the casing it is only necessary to depress the button 18 and swing the cover 11-from the casing and 55 toy then retract the adjacent spring arm 2 7 from the spool which withdraws the bearb ing .26 and freesthe spool. The spool may now be tilted upwardly'andremoved from s the-casing .together with the web which is 00 wound thereon. n
A diferentweb-or strip ma 25 may then be substituted by reversm t e movements and releasingthe spring v2 when the spoolv is in place `so 'as tohold it in the casing ready 65 foruse.
Itl isp-obvious that various changes and modicationsmay be Imade'z'in the details of construction and `design-4 ofi 'the above speciically described'embodiinent'of this in- 7 vention without departing romthe yspirit thereof, such changes and modifications` being restricted only by the scope of the fol? lowingclaim.vr j f What is 'claimed is: i f
