Referring specifically to the drawings, 1 indicates the toe part of the last and 2 the heel part.
3 is the hinge member, comprising a cylindrical tubular body having ears 19 projecting at one end thereof, these ears being flattened and lying in parallel vertical planes, with pintle holes 20 through the same, and a hole 23 through the front end to receive a pin l, inserted through a bore 12 to hold the hinge member in the bored socket 11- made to receive it in the toe part of the last. The hinge member is conveniently stamped in a blank from sheet metal and then bent to circular form, bringing the edges 21 together as shown in Fig. 8.
The knuckle joint between the sections is formed by sawing the heel part with a transverse knuckle 20 extending across the meet ing face, which tits in a sawed socket 31 in Specification of Letters Patent.

The knuckle 30 has vertical kerfs 13 to receive the ears 19 of the hinge member, and has a cross bore 11 to receive the pintle which extends through the same and also through the holes 20 in the ears 19. The curved surfaces of the knuckle and socket 31 are concentric with the axis of the pintle 5. Below the joint the toe part is sawed to produce a transverse rearwardly extending projection 15 which stops against the complementary shoulder 16 of the heel part when the last is traightened. T he surfaces of the knuckle 30 and socket 31 are in close contact in all positions of the last parts, and the relatively narrow kerfs 13 are the only parts of the wood which are cut away across the knuckle, which is where the principal strain comes, so the remaining wood provides a strong and rigid joint, in connection with the hinge member 3 fitting closely in the socket 1 1 in the toe part.
The locking device consists of a sleeve 7, which is inserted in a bore 10 extending vertically downward from a shoulder on the front end of the heel part, and this sleeve houses a bent catch 6 which is capable of being turned therein and which extends below the lower end of the sleeve where it is provided with a head 9 and a spring 8 coiled between said head and the sleeve 7, said spring tending to pull the catch 6 down so as to hold its free end in close engagement with the rear end of the toe part of the last when said last is straightened. An extension 22 on the sleeve forms a stop for the catch when it is turned crosswise preparatory to flexing the last on the hinge. A wear plate may be set in the toe part of the last where the catch 6 presses against it, and this catch is of such length that it will span the space between the toe and heel parts and prevent flexing of the last when not desired. To release the catch, it is pulled up slightly, against the tension of the spring 8, and turned to inoperative position, and in order to permit this to be done without the end of the catch projecting beyond the surface of the side of the last, the bore 10 is offset to one side of the middle line, so as to give space for the catch to swing around on the other side within the plane of the side of the last.
