APPARATUS FOR HOISTING AND LOWERING SHIPS BOATS.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AXEL WELIN, a subject of the King of Sweden, and a resident of London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Hoisting and Lowering Ships Boats, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in apparatus for hoisting and lowering ships boats, and it is especially designed for enabling boats to be carried on a lower deck instead of on the top deck of a vessel.
By the use of my invention one at least of a pair of davits which carry a boat is so arranged that the boat can cross the axis of that davit with the result that the boat can be swung in by a simple simultaneous rotation of the two davits about their axis in one and the same direction and may be swung out by a simple rotation in the opposite direction. I preferably effect this by supporting at least one of the davits from above the boat instead of below as is usual. Preferably the two davits are geared together so that their arms may always be parallel to one another, and this may be effected by means of short arms fast with the davits and connected by a link. The davits are preferably rotated about their axes by means of a quadrant fast with one of them and gearing with a pinion fast with a worm wheel rotated by a worm but any other convenient method of turning the davits may be employed.
In a case where a boat is carried on a lower deck, one davit arm may conveniently be carried by a post like a crane post stepped in a bracket on the ships side, the top of the post turning in a bearing on the deck above, while the other davit arm is at the bottom of a post or shaft which passes up through the deck above and is provided with a collar turning on a bearing on that deck. The davits may be rotated as above described; the quadrant may be on either davit. and operated by a handle and worm gear on the deck above. The arms and connecting link should be close under the deck above so as to be out of the way.
The falls are preferably led back along the davit arms to sheaves fast with the clavits and close to their axes, thence to guide pulleys and back close beneath the deck above (but below the link or rod) to a hoisting drum which may be situated wherever Specification of Letters Patent.

convenient. The guide pulleys mentioned may be so arranged with respect to the sheaves that as the boat passes over the edge of the ships side, it may be slightly raised by the turning of the davits, so as to clear the stringer plate.
When one davit is stepped on the ships side and the other carried by the deck above I preferably connect the fall from the first davit nearer the center of gravity of the boat than the fall from the second, so that a larger share of the weight may be carried by the stronger davit. It is obvious that both davits might if desired be supported from above.
This invention not only allows of a boat being swung in and out by a simple turning movement of the davits in one direction or the other, the boat being always parallel to the ships side and the falls always vertical, but it also allows as has been pointed out of the boats being readily carried on one or more of the lower decks, which is a great advantage in the case of big liners, for not only is more room available for passengers on the top deck but the boats do not have to be lowered and hoisted such a great height; moreover the boats can easily be filled by passengers dropping into them from the deck above while they are hanging in a suitable position just beneath the edge of such deck.
In the accompanying drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a side View; Fig. :2 a plan view; and Fig. 3 a View looking on the stern of the boat.
Referring now to these drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment of my invention, a boat 1 is shown as carried on a deck 2 that has two decks 3, 4: above it.
5 indicates a stern davit post carrying an arm 6 and stepped in a bracket 7 on the ships side while its top turns in a bearing 8 on the deck 3.
9 designates a bow davit post carrying an arm 10 and turning in bearings 11, 12 on the decks 3 and I, a collar 13 being provided on it to turn upon the bearing 11. Preferably, fast on the davits 5, 9 are short arms 14, 15 connected by a link 16 so that the arms 6, 10 may always be parallel to one another.
The stern davit 5, as illustrated, passes up above the deck 3 and carries a quadrant 17 me ger? gearing with a pinion 18 on a spindle 19 provided with a worm wheel 20 meshing with a worm worked by a handwheel 21. By turning this handwheel the davits can be rotated from the outboard position shown in dotted lines in F i g. 2 to the extreme inboard position (likewise shown in dotted lines) in which position the boat can be secured so that no part of it projects beyond the ships side.

Having described my invention, 1 claim:
1. Apparatus for hoisting and lowering ships boats embodying a pair of davits arranged to support a boat between two decks of a ship, one of such davits being supported on the deck above the boat and extending downwardly therefrom and so positioned in relation to the opposite davit as to compel the boat to cross the axis of the davit so supported; means :torconnecting the two da'vits to compel the same to move simultaneously.
2. Apparatus for hoisting and lowering ships boats embodying a pair of davits arranged to support a boat between two decks of a ship, one member of which pair is pivotally supported upon the deck above the boat and the other member has a pivotal connection with the deck below the boat, means for connecting the two davits to compel the same to move simultaneously through similar angles and means for rotating one of said davits to compel the boat to cross the axis of the davit supported from the deck above the boat.
3. Apparatus for hoisting and lowering ships boats embodying a pair of davits arranged to support a boat between two decks of a ship, one member of which pair is pivotally supported upon the deck above the boat and the other member has a pivotal connection with the decks both above and be low the boat, means for connecting the two davits to compel the same to move simultaneously through similar angles and means for rotating one of said davits to compel the boat to cross the axis of the davit supported from the deck above the boat.
