"a subject ot'l the King of Great Britain, have or pivoted lever or strut member which is so connected to` the davit that, as the davit moves downward, the strut member moves upward, both the davit and the strut member carrying the rope or other fall, the arrangement being such that as the davit mem- Iber moves downward and the leverage eX- erted by the load increases the strut member in moving upward bears the load thereby rehaving increasingly the stress upon the davit and preventing the same bending or breaking. rFhe davit may be so arranged that as it moves angularly downward it may also move or slide outward. thereby giving it a greater range and moving the boat farther away from the ships side..
Preferably, li use a single davit and secure its lower end pivotally in brackets on the boat deck at a short distance from the ships side and li connect its upper end, by means oflone or more links, to the upper end of a strut member which is hinged or pivoted at the ships side. As the davit is linked to the strut member the two move together, the strut member rising toward the vertical as the davit membermoves downward and outward and, contrariwise, the strut member moves toward the horizontal as the davit member moves toward the vertical and inboard. In certain cases Where it is desired to move the boat as Jfar away from the ship as possible during the lowering operation the davit 4 is made with sliding blocks or with rollers at its pivotal end, the blocks, or the rollers, moving in guides secured to the boat deck, and this end of the `davit is connected to the strut member in such manner that, as the strut member mantenerme. In the arrangement, Figs. 1 to 3, the davit e is pivoted at e1, at its lower end, in bear-` ing brackets 1, 2, securely fastened to the dec-k and is capable of moving, in a vertical plane, inboard and outboard, the inboard` position being shown in full lines, at Fig. 1,
and full outboard position in dotted lines.

As the davit is allowed to move downward by the paying out of the rope, the strut member, owing to its link connection with the davit, moves-,along with it until it iinally assumes the vertical position (see dotted lines Fig. l) the davit, then resting upon thev stops 8 and the boathanging clear of the ship. In this position the boat may beylowered away clear of the shipby `simply paying out the rope. Whenfa'boat is being raised the winding of the rope raises the boat and eventuallyalso moves the davit inboard thestrut member being brought again to the position shown infull lines, at Fig. land resting on the stops9.. The boat` is loweredinto chocks provided for its reception but not shown on the. drawings.
It will be seen that, as the leverage of the davit member increases owing t0 its outboard movement, the support ofA the strut member v correspondingly increases and it eases the load so that there is less liability of the davit breakingaway at its pivots upon which there would, otherwise, be great stress.
Inv some cases, especially inlarge liners, it may be desirable to, move the. boat farther away `from the ships.` side when lowering it and, in order that, this maybe done, the
pivots of the davt member'are. made so as to move outward toward ythe ships side thereby giving the maximum reach of the davit.- This arrangement, is shown at Figs. 4 and 5 the'pivotSlO being.r shown in the inboard position in full lines and in the extremevoutboard position in dotted lines. In this, case .the davit. e, isz-Provided with sliding blocks 10a (or rollers, or. equivalent) capableof traveling in guides 1 1 securely fas-Y tened -tothe deck, and the pivots 10 of the davit (working freelyin said sliding blocks) are connected by means of a drag bar 12 to the strut member at a position some distance above the pivot 3 of the latter. As will be seen the strut member may, in this case, be pivoted at the side of the ship in a strong bracket 13 and be capable of swinging through a vertical arc from the inboard posi- `tion shown in full lines, Fig. 4, to the outboard position shown in dotted lines, same figure. With this arrangement the strut member is not only linked, atits upper end to the upper endl of the davit, by ymeans of the links 5,1but, is also linkedA thereto by the drag bar'12. yAs a result-a compound or dual motion takes place when the boat is being lowered, the davit, as it moves downward, andthe strut member, as it moves upward, causing a simultaneous movement, of the pivots along the4 guides 11 with the result that the davitmoves bodily and its pivots gradually travel toward the outside of the shipnntil, when fully lowered, they assume the position shown in dotted lines, Fig. 4.'
When the davit is at, say, the port side andthe ship has a list to starboard it is obvious the davit will not tend to fall'outboard by gravity and to meet this requirement the guides and pivots may be carried on a hinged platform capable. of being raised at the inboard end, by means of screw, or other gear.
The winch employed may be of any suitable and well known type and be provided with a powerful self-sustaining brake so, that a boat may be held in any position when lowering. rlfhe winch may be operable by hand or by power.
If desired guys 21 may extend from the deck to the top. of the strut member.
Fig. 6 shows a pulley block which I prefer to use with a single davit. This block ll is made with arms 15 andstitening webs 16. and a pin. 17 is passed through the arm the spindle carrying a revoluble pulley 18 over which the fall c passes. The arms are of such length that the slings 19,r 20, from the fore and aft ends of the boat, do not converge closely together but are secured at some distance apart on the pin 17 thereby preventing tendency to strain the boat by drawing itsends together. The webs 16 prevent the pin bending under the load.
Although I have shownr methods of constructing the apparatus I do not confine myself theretok as the structural parts could be alltered as. required to suit dierent types of s 11p.
What I claim ascmy invention and desire to. secure by Letters Patent is 1. Apparatus for raising and lowering ships boats, comprising, in'v combination, a pivoted davit, a pivoted member, means connecting the davit to. the member in such manner that as the davit moves downward themember moves upward, winding means :naeaeee and a fall extending from said winding means over the upper ends of the member and the davit.
2. Apparatus for raising and lowering ships boats, comprising, in combination, a pivoted davit, a pivoted member, means connecting the davit to the member in such manner that as the davit moves downward the member moves upward, winding means and a fall (from which the boat is suspended by a pulley block) extending from said winding means over the upper ends oit the member and the davit.
3. Apparatus for raising and lowering ships boats, comprising, in combination, a pivoted davit, a pivoted member, means connecting the davit to the member in such manner that as the davit moves downward the member moves upward, winding means and a iall from which the boat is suspended by a pulley block having laterally projecting arms and slings connecting the boat to said arms.
4.. Apparatus for raising and lowering ships boats, comprising, in combination, a pivoted davit, apivoted member, means connecting the davit to the member in such .manner that as the davit moves downward the member moves upward, winding means and a fall from which the boat is suspended .by a pulley block having laterally projecting arms, a spindle in the arms and slings connecting the boat to said spindle.
5. Apparatus for raising and lowering ships boats, comprising, in combination, a pivoted davit, a rigid strut member pivoted at its lower end and link means connecting the upper end of the davit to the upper end of the strut member in such manner that as the davit moves downward the strut member moves upward.
6. Apparatus for raising and lowering ships boats, comprising, in combination, a pivoted davit, a double rigid strut member pivoted at its lower end and link means conneet-ing the upper end of the davit to the upper end of the member in such manner that as the davit moves downward the member moves upward.

Apparatus for raising and lowering ships boats, comprising, in combination, a davit capable of moving through a vertical arc and also of a lateral movement, guides determining said lateral movement, a strut member capable of moving through a vertical arc, means connecting the davit and the member so as to move 1n unison, winding means, pulleys on both the davit and the strut member and a boat fall extending from said winding means over said pulleys.
