Be it known that I, JOHN BURT, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at, and whose post-office address is, 27 \Yreigh street,Hebburn-on-Tyne, in the county of Durham, England, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Apparatus for Raising and Lowering Ships Boats, (for which I have applied for a patent in Great Britain under No. 6, 9&5, dated March 25,1903, and in Germany under date January, 1904..) of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to apparatus for raising and lowering ships boats, and has for its object to provide means whereby ships boats can be expeditiouslylaunched and maintained in a perfectly horizontal or level position during lowering or raising.

The davit-arms of the apparatus are pivoted at their lower ends to the side of the vessel, and the boat rests in chocks or cradles that are formed on or secured to a horizontal stay-bar pivoted in the free or upper ends of the davitarms. The stay-bar is provided with a bellcrank or equivalent device to which the raising and lowering tackle and one end of a supplementary arm or jib are connected, the other end of said arm or jib being pivoted to the side of the vessel at a point below the level of the hinges of the davit-arms.

By way of example I will now proceed to describe one way of carrying my invention into effect, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a part cross-section showing a boat in the inboard or housed position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of Fig. 1; and Figs. 3 and 4: are similar views to Fig. 1, showing the boat in different outboard or swung-out positions.

Referring to the drawings, (a a are the davits, the lower ends of which are hinged at a suitable distance apart to the side of the vessel, as at Z) L. The raising and lowering tackle is connected to the bell-crank arm and may conveniently consist of a rope passing under and over rollers in a bracket p, disposed on the platform It, and through tackle-blocks q 1*, connected, respectively, to the arm A: and to a loop 5, provided on the platform h.

Then it is desired to lower the boat after the usual lashings have been undone, the davits a a are swung outward, as shown in Fig. 3, carrying the boat supported on the chocks or cradles (Z (Z with them, and the arm or jib m, coacting with the arm j on the bar a, maintains the chocks or cradles, and consequently the boat, in a level or horizontal position until the latter is water-borne, as shown in Fig. 4c, when on the davits a a being still farther lowered the boat can float clear of the chocks (Z (Z and the davits can be returned inboard.

WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In apparatus for raising and lowering ships boats, davit-arms pivoted at their lower ends to the side of the vessel, a horizontal staybar pivoted to the free upper ends of the davit-arms, cradles secured to said horizontal stay-bar and adapted to receive the boat, a supplementary arm pivoted to the side of the vessel at a point below the level of the hinges of the davit-arms, a bell-crank lever mounted on the stay-bar and adapted to rock therewith, one arm of said lever being pinned to the free upper end of the supplementary arm and the other arm being adapted to be secured to raising and lowering tackle.

2. In apparatus for raising and lowering ships boats, davit-arms hinged to the side of the vessel below the level of the boat when in its inboard position, a supplementary arm of the same length as the davit-arms hinged to the side of the vessel at a point below the level of the hinges of the davit-arms, ohocks mounted on a stay-bar pivoted to the free my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
