To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN CLAUDE Dozn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Conway Springs, in the county of Sumner and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wire Splicers and Stretchers, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an improved wire stretcher and is designed particularly to provide a simple type of structure which is capable of effecting a convenient stretching operation in wire fence structures.
The main object of the present invention is the provision of a tool of this character including a cylindrical member about which the holding and splicing wire is wound and a means for rotating the member so as to coil such wire for tightening the same or for stretching purposes.
The invention in its preferred form of details will be described in the following specification, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved tool. Fig. 2 is a diagrammatic View illustrating the use of the tool in tightening the wire from one support or post to another.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawings, the improved tool comprises a cylindrical member 1, which will be hereinafter termed the winding drum, which has a length corresponding approximately to the height of the ordinary fence. The drum is formed with wire receiving openings 2 extending diametrically therethrough at different points in the length of the drum, said openings being preferably of different diameters to snugly receive wires of different sizes. Near the upper end the drum is formed With transverse opening 3 to removably receive a handle bar 4, the latter being formed on one end of the head 5 to provide for the use of this handle bar in wire splicing, as will be presently described.
In the use of the device for stretching a wire between fixed points I use What I term a stretching rod 11 having terminal eyes 12 Specification of Letters Patent.

and 13, the latter being laterally offset to the main length of the rod. Secured in the eye 12 of the rod is a clamp including a blade 14- having aclamping shoulder 15 and a cam shaped lever 16 cooperating with the shoulder to clamp the wire therebetween. The wire to be stretched, as shown at 17 which is secured at one end to a post or the like, is secured within the clamp at the point adj acent its free end. A stretching wire 18 is fixed about a post 19 to which the wire 17 is to be stretched, passed through the eye 13 of the stretching rod and through one of the openings 2 in the drum. The latter is then rotated by means of the handle drawing upon the stretching wire and obviously stretching the wire 17 between the clamp and the fixed end of said wire. By this means, said wire is stretched to the desired tension and the free end thereof fixed to the post or other support designed to receive it. The head 5 at the end of the handle serves as a means to limit the movement of the handle in the use of the latter in forming the loops in the ends of the walls, as will be obvious.
The tool in its entirety provides a compact, simple structure, which may be readily used in practically any and all conditions, which, when not in use, will occupy little space in storage.
What is claimed is A stretching tool including a cylindrical drum formed with diametrically arranged wire receiving openings and with a handle receiving opening, a handle loosely passed through said handle receiving opening and arranged transversely of the drum, in combination with a stretching rod having ter minal eyes, one of said eyes being in the plane of the rod and the other positioned laterally thereof, and a clamp carried by the eye arranged in the plane of the rod.
