of the borough of Manhattan, city, county,

and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigarette-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

My present invention relates to boxes adapted to contain cigarettes and other articles, and has for its object to provide an improved construction enabling such boxes to be manufactured .at low cost and giving them a neat appearance.

Another feature of my invention is that it combines with the outside part of the box, an interior holder connected with the said outside part in a novel way, causing said holder to stand midway between the members or lids of the outside part when the box is opened,

Otherfeatures of my invention will appear from the description following hereinafter, and the novelty will be defined in the appended claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the box, taken on line 1-1 of Fig. 2, and showing the box open; Fig. 2 is .a top view of the open box; Fig. 3 is a partial vertical section taken on the same plane as Fig. 1, but show ing the box closed; Fig. 4 is a partial vertical section taken on line 4 ---4 of Fig. 2 and drawn upon an enlarged scale; and Fig. 5 shows another construction of the interior holder.

As illustrated in the drawings, the outside part of the box comprises two members or lids A, B, which are hinged together in any suitable manner, as by means of a flexible strip C of cloth or the like. Each lid is shown provided'with a continuous flange A, B respectively, and in addition to this, one of the lids, for instance, A, has a wider flange A set within the flange A on three sides of the rectangular lid, the flange A being discontinued along the short side which is adjacent to the hinge. Preferably, the ends of the flange A, adjacent to the hinge, are rounded as shown at A thus enabling the said flange to enter more readily within the flange B of the other lid B as the box is being closed. The flange A, being wider than the flange A, projects from the Specification of Letters Patent.

This holder may be given different shapes and constructions, my present invention relating chiefly to the means employed for connecting the inner holder with the outside part of the box. Thus, while I have shown two specific constructions of the holder in the accompanying drawings, it will be understood that I do not restrict myself to these forms. In Figs. 1 to 4, the holder is composed of a bottom band E of rectangular shape, a similar top band F, and a central partition G to which said bands are secured, said partition having at each side corrugations H to form sockets or seats for the cigarettes D, held between the partition and the surrounding bands E, F, and projecting beyond the top band F. As shown in Fig. 2, the holder will take ten cigarettes in two rows of five each. The hold-er shown in Fig. 5 has the corrugations H at one side of the surrounding bands such as F, and is adapted to receive a single row of ten cigarettes.

Whatever construction of the holder is adopted, its connection with the outside part of the box is effected in the following fashion: WVith the lower part of the holder is connected, as by gluing it thereto, a bottom member strip J made of cardboard or other suitable material. From the edges of this bottom member, supporting members or links K extend toward the adjacent portions of the flanges A and B respectively, these links converging as shown best in Fig. A. At the other ends the links K are connected with attaching members L which are secured to those members or portions of the flanges A and B which are nearest the hinge of the lids A and B. The lines M where the links K join the bottom member J, and the lines N at the junction of said links with the attaching members L, are parallel to the hinge of the lids A, B, and form hinges, and in order to facilitate motion at these points, the material of which the members J, K, and L are made may be scored at said junction lines, aS will be readily understood. The drawing shows the parts J, K, and L made of one piece, but will be understood that this is not essential, although it is the simplest construction. In order to more securely connect the bottom member J and links K with the holder, two strips 0 of flexible material, such as cloth, may be pasted or otherwise fastened, partly to the for the cigarette holder, as shown in Figs.

It will be understood that the thickness of the several parts has been greatly exaggerated in Fig. 4 to better show the structure; this is particularly true of the parts J, K, and L.

The links K should preferably be of suflicient stifiness to act as supporting members 1 and 4:. As illustrated in these figures, the box may be opened fully so that the lids A, B, will lie flat and in alinement with each other. hinged connection with the bottom member J and with the attaching members L respectively, will keep the holder midway between the lids A, B, the strips 0 assisting in steadying the holder. Thus, as the box is opened, the cigarette holder will swing open with the lids, but only half the distance, so that the cigarettes may be taken out readily. Of course, this construction also allows the holder to be filled readily with cigarettes or other articles. The construction is very simple and therefore inexpensive.

Various modifications may be made without departing from the nature of my invention as set forth in the appended claims.

I claim as my invention:

1. A box for cigarettes and other articles, comprising two lids hinged to each other, a holder located between said lids, a bottom member secured to said holder, attaching members secured to the respective lids, relatively stifi links having a hinge connection at one end with the said bottom member, and at the other end with said attaching members, and flexible strips secured to said links and to the lower portion of the holder.
