transparent cylindrical member, which is adjustable to and from the burner for the purpose of changing the color of the light.

Another object of this invention is the provision of novel means for retaining the cylindrical casing in its raised and lowered positions.

A further object of this invention is to improve and simplify devices of this character rendering them comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and efficient in use, and readily operated.

Vith the above and other objects in View this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view thereof, with parts removed; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of that portion of the invention shown in Fig. 2.

Referring to the accompanying drawing by similar characters of reference throughout the several views, the numeral 10 designates generally my improved lantern, which consists of a supporting frame 11 formed at one end with a customary rest 12 and at its opposite end being provided with a handle 13.

A cylindrical receptacle 14 is secured to the lower endof the frame 11, the same consisting of a continuous wall 15 closed at one end by a bottom 16.

An inner circular wall 17 is secured to the bottom 16 in spaced relation from the exterior wall 15, and is provided intermediate of its ends with a supporting flange 18, for receiving and retaining in its proper position the oil cup 19.

The spacing of the walls 15 and 17 produces a circular passage 20, in which is lo cated a tubular chimney 21 formed from any desired transparent material, and being of any color. The upper and lower ends of thls chimney 21 are reinforced, as shown at 22, and projecting from the lower reinforcements are lateral pins 23 which extend through vertical slots 24 formed in the opposite sides of the wall 14. The lower extremities of these slots 24 are offset or 6X tended laterally, inorder that when the pins are turned therein the said chimney 21 will be held against any undesired vertical movement. These pins 23 project beyond the exterior surface of the casing14'for -engagement with a bail 25 which can be retained in its raised position through the medium of the latch 26, which will retain the chimney 21 against any undesired movement in either its raised or lowered position.

The upper end of the frame 11 is provided with any suitable means such as shown at 27, for engaging the upper end of the globe 28, while formed upon the upper end of the wall 15 are fingers 29, adapted to engage the lower end of this globe.

The burner which is mounted in any desired manner is indicated by the numeral 30.

Obviously when the chimney 21 is raised so as to incase the burner, a light will be given which will be the color of the mate rial from which the said chimney 21 is formed and when the said chimney 21 is lowered the light will be like that of an ordinary lantern.

A coil spring 31 is disposed within the passage between the walls 15 and 17, and engages the lower end of the chimney 21 in order that when the pins 23 are removed from the offsets 25 into the slots 24, the said spring will serve to raise the chimney sufficiently for its top to be above the level of the burner 30, and will support the chimney in its raised position independently of the bail in case the latter should become displaced from its supporting position illustrated in Fig. 2, and in dotted lines in Fig. 1.

It should be understood in this connection that various minor changes in the specific details of construction can be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

From the foregoing disclosures taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it will be manifest that a lantern is provided which will fulfil all of the necessary requirements of such a device.

Having thus fully described this invention what I claim-as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is: 1. In a lantern such as described the combination with a receptacle having inner and outer spaced walls, a chimney slidable in the space between said walls, one of said walls being slotted, pins projecting from the chimney through the slots in the wall a bail attached to said pins, and a latch for engagement with the free end of the bail and coacting therewith for retaining the chimney in its lower position. i

The combination with a lantern frame of a vertically slotted receptacle, a chimney mounted for vertical movement in the receptacle, pins connecting with the chimney and extending outwardly through the slots of the receptacle, and a bail connected with said pins and adapted to co-act therewith and with means on the lantern frame adjacent to the top of the receptacle for supporting said chimney in its lowered position.

3. The combination with a lantern frame, of a receptacle supported by the frame and having opposite vertical slots therein provided with lateral extensions, a chimney mounted for vertical movement in the receptacle, pins connected with the chimney and extending outward through the slots and adapted for movement therein, and a bail connecting the pins with said frame and co-acting therewith so as to hold the pins in the lateral extensions of the slots and thereby retaining the chimney securely in its lower position.
