Letters Patent No. 109,221,11aed November 15, 1810.
IMPROVEMENT IN SCAFFOLD-BRACKETS FOR ROOFING.-
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, JOHN R. KENNETT, of Geddes, in the county of Onondaga and State of N ew York, have invented a new and' useful Improvement in Shingling Bracket; and I do herebydeclare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others to make and use the same, reference being had. to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective side view of my invention, and
Figure 2 is a side view, showing the bracket in use.

My improvement in bracket-clamps for shingling consists in the use of a single lower jaw or bed-plate, with a toothed lever mounted thereon, the lower end of the lever acting, in conjunction with the bed-plate, to form the clamping part, while the opposite end of the lever acts as the bracket, as hereinafter more fully described. y l
In the accompanying drawing- A is the bed-plate, having a pair of curved arms, a a, projecting upward from its rear-part, ou which is mounted a lever, B, by a pivot, c, passing through the lever alittle below its center.
The lower end of the lever is sharpened, and has also a. series of teeth, b, iig. 1, while the longer end projects upward to serve as the bracket.
The device is applied as follows:
The thin front end of the bed-plate A is inserted under the end of a shingle, and pushed under to the arms a', and the lever B being then thrown up, its lower end engages with the ripper shingle E, as seen in fig.v 2, and the serrated heel f of the platform engages with the lower shinglee. l
By this construction of bracket and clamp the scantling or staging D lies directly onthe roof, so as to be more rrn and steady, and also more snug to the roof, so that loose nails and shingles cannot pass under it and down the roof.
The clamp also engages with thick or thin shingles with the same readiness, and obtains a very secure hold.
The lower end of the lever B can have a cam in place of the sharp termination or teeth b.
Having thus described my invention, What I claini, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
