HENRY G'. MARBURGERQOF LITCHFELCD, ILLINOIS.
PENHOLDER.
Application filed July 5, 1912.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY G. Mnnunenn, a citizen of the United States7 residing at Litchfield, in the county of Montgomery and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful mprovements in Penholders, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvement-s in pen holders.
ln carrying out the invention it is my purpose to provide a pen holder of a simple construction, having means whereby a pen may be firmly and rigidly supported and readily ejected without the necessity of soiling the lingers of the writer.
The improvement comprises in combination with a stock, a ferrule having upset portions forming ears, a flattened spring memloer provided with a slot whereby the same is passed over the ears and a pen point gripping and releasing member constructed of a single strip of material embodying a handle portion having its sides down-turned to provide ears which are adapted to be pivotally connected with the ears of the ferrule, the strip being further provided with a downturned portion terminating` in a jaw which, through the medium of the spring is adapted to be firmly pressed against the ferrule to retain a pen point between the jaw and the ferrule, and which, upon the operation of the handle will loe spread away from the ferrule to permit of the pen point dropping by gravity or otherwise removed from between the ferrule and jaw.
For the purpose of illustration the accompanying drawing shows a satisfactory reduction of the improvement to practice and in the drawing, Figure l is a perspective view of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view upon the line 33 of Fig. 2.
The improved devices comprise a ferrule l which is adapted to frictionally engage with or to be otherwise secured to a pen stock 2. The ferrule is constructed of a single element and has its meeting edges at the top portion thereof bent upwardly to provide ears 3. The ears 3 are provided with registering openings5 and the said openings are adapted to aline with similar openings provided in down-turned ears i formed from the holder element of the device. This element, which may be designated by the numeral 5, is constructed of a Specification of Letters Patent.

single piece of suitable material7 and embodies a handle 6 which is arranged to the rear of its ears ll. The said element 5 is bent downwardly forward of its ears 4 as designated by the numeral 7, and the material from which the said lelement is formed is extended in a plane parallel with that of the upper surface of the ferrule l. This extending portion provides what T term the jaw 8 of the device, the said jaw conforming in cro-ss section to the rounded upper portion of the ferrule.
The numeral 9 designates a flat spring member. This member is provided adjacent one of its ends with a slot 10, and whereby the said spring may be passed over the ears 8 of the ferrule and be contacted by the ears l of the element-5, soas to sustain the said spring in a proper position upon the device, and to permit of the spring exerting a sufficient tension upon the under face of the handle 6 to force the jaw 7 tightly into engagement with the stock 9J, and thus effectively sustain pen point between the stock and the said jaw.
It is obvious by providing the element 5 with a down-turned or bent portion 7 which terminates in the jaw 8, the said downturned portion as well as the aw may serve as a rest for the fore finger of the Writer, and the additional pressure upon the jaw occasioned thereby will materially assist the spring 9 in retaining the pen point between the jaw and the ferrule.
What T do claim is The combination with a pen stock and a ferrule connected with the pen stock, said ferrule having its meeting edges up-turned to provide ears having apertures, a fiat spring member having a slot disposed adjacent its forward end, the ears of the ferrule adapted to pass through the slot of the spring, a pen retaining element constructed of a single piece of material embodying a handle member having formed integral and on the longitudinal edges thereof relatively spaced down-turned apertured ears, alining the apertures thereof with the apertures of the first mentioned ears, means passing through the alined apertures for pivotally connecting the sec-ond mentioned ears to the first mentioned ears and disposing the free ends of the bottom edges of the second named ears upon the upper surface of the spring at opposite sides of the slot, and the spring being also adapted to contact with the handle, the said holding element being` In testimony whereof aix my signature provided With a down-turned portion ad- 1n presence of two Witnesses.
jacent its ears, and being further extended 1 to provide a rounded jaw Which, through the HLNRY G MARBURGER' 5 medium of the springis adapted to fric-v Witnesses:
tonally engage with the upper and forward EDWARD C. MARBURGER,
end of the ferrule. OTTO C. J. MARBURGER.
