Be it known that I, BARNETT H. Gono- STEIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of the Bronx, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Combined Chair and Basket, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to improvements in combined chairs and baskets, and has for an object to provide an improved structure which will afford a seat for an operator and a suitable convenient receptacle for the operators work.

Another object of the invention is to provide a combined chair and basket formed of fire-resisting material and arranged with covers or lids pivotally hinged in such a manner as to act at one time as a seat and back, and at another time as lids or covers for the basket or receptacle.

In carrying out the objects of the invention, preferably an oblong receptacle of metal is provided, though other shapes and other material may be used, if desired. This receptacle is supported by legs a suitable distance above the floor in order to make the same of the proper height and to comply with the usual fire regulations in manufacturing establishments. Arranged on the top of the box or receptacle are two lids or covers, one of which is hinged on one side of the receptacle, and the other of which is hinged substantially centrally and designed to act as a seat, while the lid hinged to the edge acts as a back for a chair. When not in use as a combined chair and basket, the lids are usually closed so as to make a substantially fireproof receptacle in which the work of the operator is placed.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a side view of an embodiment of the invention, certain parts being broken away for better disclosing the structure thereof; Fig. 2 is a front view of the structure shown in Fig. 1; and Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the structure shown in Fig. 1.

In manufacturing and establishments various other places, it is foundnecessary to have the workmans bench or chair and a basket arranged together or near each other. When these articles are made of combustible material, fire will easily spread from one to the other, especially where a number of these receptacles and chairs are associated in close proximity. To overcome this objection to fire and to systematize the arrangement of workmens or operators chairs and baskets, an improved combined chair and basket is shown in the accompanying drawings.

Referring to these drawings by numerals, 1 indicates the body of the receptacle which acts as a basket. The body 1 is provided with a plurality of legs 2 of a proper length for complying with the fire regulations of any particular place. As shown in Fig. 2, the legs extend through the bottom of the receptacle and are riveted or bolted at 3 to the receptacle or basket 1. Arranged substantially centrally of the body 1 is a cross bar 4 which may be made of any desired shape in cross section, and of any desired strength so as to properly support one edge of the lid 5. The lid 5 is hinged to the cross bar 4 so that the same may be placed in a position shown in Fig. 2 when the basket is not in use, and moved to the position shown in Fig. 3 when the device is being used. Part of the basket 1 together with the lid 5 and lid 6 act as a chair, but the remaining part of the body 1 acts as a basket in which the work is placed and where it is kept except the particular article which is being manufactured. It will be noted that lid 5 is hinged to the bar 4, while lid 6 is hinged to one edge of the body 1. Lid 5 is provided with a stop 7 for normally holding the lid 6 in an open position when the device is in use, but when the lid 5 is closed, as shown in Fig. 2, the spring 8 acts through links 9 and causes lid 6 to automatically close.

Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a device of the character described, a receptacle, and legs for supporting the receptacle, said legs comprising a bar bent upwardly centrally and with a pair of upwardly extending portions projecting through the bottom of the receptacle, means for rigidly connecting the upwardly extending portions with said receptacle and means for rigidly connecting the center portion of said bar to the bottom of said receptacle.

In a device of the character described, a rectangular receptacle, a lid hinged centrally of the top of the receptacle adapted to be swung so as to cover the top of either end of the receptacle, a lid for one end of the receptacle hinged to the side of the receptacle, means for normally tending to close said last mentioned lid, and a stop secured to the last mentioned lid positioned so as to engage the second mentioned lid and prevent the closing thereof when the first mentioned lid is moved pivotally to the end of the receptacle carrying the second mentioned lid.

In a device of the character described, a substantially rectangular receptacle, a cross bar extending across the top of the re ceptacle, a lid hinged to the side of the receptacle and adapted to cover one part of thereceptacle, a second lid pivotally connected with said cross bar and adapted to cover the part of said receptacle not covered by said first mentioned lid, said second mentioned lid being adapted to be swung so as to cover that portion of the top of the receptacle normally covered by said first mentioned lid whereby a seat and a back are provided, and a stop connected with said second mentioned lid and arranged in the path of movement of said first mentioned lid for preventing the closing of said first men tioned lid when the second mentioned lid is in front of the first mentioned lid and acting as a seat.
