Patented Oct. 9, 191%.
Application filed March 8, 1916. Serial No. 82,830.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT TAPPAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Change-Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to coin handling devices and more particularly to change receptacles.
An object of my invention is to provide a change receiving and delivering device into which coins may be placed when handing change over a counter to a customer, it being the usual practice at the present time to place the chan e on the counter rendering it extremely di cult at times for the customer to pick up the same particularly with a gloved hand. My invention comtemplates the provision of a receptacle into which the change may be deposited, said receptacle having a depressiblecplatform therein which receives the coins an down which the coins slide into the hand of the person for whom they are intended.
Another object of my invention is to pro vide a device of the class described, which is simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, strong and durable and effective in operation,
Other objects and advantages to be derived from the use of my invention will ap pear from the following detail description and the claim, taken with an inspection of the accompanying drawing, in Which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a change receiving device embodying the improvement of my invention,
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same, a portion thereof being broken away, and
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, in which similar characters of reference designate like and corresponding parts throughout the various views, 1 designates the bod of my improved change receptacle, said he y being preferably elliptical in configuration and havin a base wall 2. The rece tacle is provide with a to wall 3 exten ing approximately one-thir or one-half the length of the receptacle to form an opening 4:. At the forward end of the receptacle 1 the peripheral wall thereof is provided with an outlet aperture 5 for a purpose which Will hereinafter appear.
I provide coin receiving and delivering means which comprises preferably a plat form 6 hingedl mounted on a transversely extending rod l carried in the receptacle 1 adjacent the terminating point of the wall 3. The platform 6 is provided with extensions 8 which are rolled about the rod 7 and a coil spring 9 is interposed between said extensions 8 and about said rod, the free ends of said coil spring engaging, respectively the under surface of the wall 3 and the platform 6. The free end of the platform 6 is provided with an arm 10 eX- tending through the opening 5 for a purpose which will hereinafter appear. From the arrangement thus provided it will be seen that the platform 6 is maintained normally in a position adjacent the upper edge of the opening 5, said platform preferably being inclined toward the front end.
In use the coins are deposited by the clerk in the receptacle 1 on the platform 6, and the customer depresses the platform by placing the back of his hand on the arm 10, thereby causing the coins to slide through the opening 5 into the palm of his hand. From the above it will be seen that I have provided a coin receptacle which facilitates the handling of money and the construction of the devlce permits its movement from place to place on a counter.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that a clear and comprehensive understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of my invention may be had, and while I have shown and described my invention as embodying a specific structure, I desire that it be understood that I may make such changes on said structure as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is A device of the character described the combination of a receptacle comprising a base, a body portion formed on said base, one end of the body being provided with an opening, a top wall provided with an open ing, a rod extending transversely of the opening and mounted in said body adjacent the top wall, a )latform, extensions formed on one end of t e platform, said extensions a being rolled about the rod providing means for hingediy connecting the dpiatform to the rod, a, coiled spring mounte on the rod between the extensions adapted to normally retain the platform in raised position, and an extension formed on said platform pro- 15 jeeting through the opening in the body for a purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my si nature.
ROBERT TAP AN.
