PIE HOLDER.

This invention relates to a holder in which pics and other articles of pastry can be carried without danger of contamination by insects, dirt, etc. Articles of this kind as generally handled in large quantities, are carried on racks in trucks and are subsequently handled by the drivel' or other attendant witliout being protected in any way. It is an object of the present invention to provide a holder which can be easily carried and, when closed, will fully protect the contents so as to keep them in a sanitary condition.

Another object is to provide a holder which is cheap to manufacture, will afford a means for coinpactly storing pies and the like', and is made up of parts easily separable to facilitate cleaning.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a substantially cylindrical container formed preferably of sheet metal and provided with a reinforced base 2. The top of this container is closed as shown at 3 and has a handle 4 secured thereto and bridging a portion thereof. The top portion of this handle is straight from end to end and formed with a longitudinal depression as shown at 5 in Figure 2.

Secured within the container 1 are superposed shelves 6 in the form of disks of metal or the like which can be provided with depending ilan s 7 held to the container by rivets or the lgilre.` The wall of the container is cut away longitudinally from the lowermost shelf 6 to a point adjacent the closed upper end 3 and the shelves are exposed within the opening 8 thus provided, said openin being extended nearly half way around t e con-` tainer.

Mounted to slide and rotate on the container 1 is a substantially cylindrical cover 9 also formed preferably of sheet metal, this cover having its lower end spaced above the lower end of the container l. of the cover is partly closed by an inwardly extended ring or flange 10 which overhangs the top 3. A retainin r bracket 11 is secured to the top 3 and has a linger 12 extendingupwardly within the space surrounded by the ring 10 and then extended outwardly to form a retaining' ear 13.

The wall of the cover is cut away longitudinally to provide'an opening .14 of substantially the saine area as the opening 8 'and when the cover is arranged in one position relative to the container the two openings 8 and 14 will register as shown in Figure l so that the shelves 6 and the contents thereof will be exposed. A handle 15 is secured to the top of the cover and extends diainetrically thereacross, this handle being formed with a depressed top portion 16 adapted to rest in the depression 5 in handle 4 when the cover has been rotated to open position as shown in Figure 1.

When the cover is in closed position as shown for exam le in Figures 2 and 4 the handle 16 exten s downwardly into the depression in handle 4 and the two handles c0- operate to provide a rip which can be held easily in one hand wereb the holder can be conveniently carried. en it is desired to remove any of the contents of the holder the upper portion of the handle 16 is lifted so as to slightly elevate the cover, this movementl ordinarily bein limited by ring or flange' 10 coming a ainst the ear 13. The cover is then rotate through 180 degrees to bring the two openings 8 and 14 into register. To close the container this operation is reversed. A notch 17 is provided in the free edge of the ring or flange 10 where, by rotating the cover through 90 degrees the notch can be brought under the ear 13 thereby allowing the cover to be lifted oil?7 of the con- 'lhe upper end tainer so that the container and cover can be separately cleaned.

vWhat is claimed is:

A device of the class described including a cylindrical container, the wall of the container being cut away longitudinally eirpose the interior of the container, a cylindrical cover slidably and rotatably mounted on the container having its Wall cut away longitudinully, said cover being rotatable to open and close the container, cooperating means on the container and cover for limiting 'the relative sliding movement thereof, said cooperating means being shiftablc to predetermined positions to release the cover for separation from the container, und normally interlitting handles carried by the cover and container for holding the cover in either full open or full closed position, said cover being novable longitudinally to disengage the lland es.
