COLLAR-FASTENING- CLIP.

Application filed July 20, 1911, Serial No. 639,514.
T 0 all whomit may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN l3. HAFERTE- PEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Collar-Fastening Clip, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a means for fastening a collar to a shirt band and has more especial reference to means adapted to secure.
the center of the collar to the center of the neck band at the back of the neck of the wearer.
The object of my present invention is to provide a fastening clip for the purpose described adapted to use with a collar having either a vertically or a horizontally disposed button hole at its center.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device for the purpose described which may be formed, preferably integrally, from either a wire or from metal and that will in either case embody substantially the same general characteristics and contour as well as also the same features of operation.
With these objects in view a clip for the purpose described in accordance with my present invention comprises a body portion having two upwardly extending members spaced apart from each other and adapted to engage upwardly and into the usual fold between the outer and inner layers of the neck band of the shirt, and from this body portion near its center and between the upwardly extending projections there extends to the rear and downwardly a tongue adapted to engage through a horizontally disposed button hole in the collar. This tongue may preferably be formed of three parts the central one of which is adapted to engage through a vertically disposed button hole in the back of the collar to be held thereby and the two outer and preferably all three of the tongues are adapted to en gage through a horizontally disposed button hole in the back of the collar.
While a clip of the character described may be formed out of sheet metal, it is sometimes preferable to make such a clip out of wire and preferably out of one piece of wire bent to and fro, upon itself and to the proper conformation to comprise the above mentioned features.
With these objects in view a clip in accordance with my invention comprises the several members formed and arranged,

whether of sheet metal or wire, preferably the latter, as shown in the accompanying drawings in which,
Figure 1 shows a view of my clip when formed of sheet metal and before the clip engaging members thereof have been bent to final position, Fig. 2 shows the completed clip as seen from the rear side. Fig. 3 shows the same in edge View. Figs. at and 5 are views similar to Figs. 2 and 3 of my clip when formed of wire. Figs. 6 and 7 show my clip in place in the neck band and inserted through the button hole of the collar, a vertical button hole being shown in Fig. 6 and a horizontal button hole being shown in Fig. 7 Fig. 8 shows in a vertical sectional view taken along the line az-y the parts seen in Fig. 7.
Similar parts are designated by similar reference characters throughout the several figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, my clip comprises, when formed of sheet metal, a body portion V having upwardly extending fold engaging members 41 and there is formed in this member V and in the extensions 42 thereon a rib g pressed inwardly and having an upward extension at its center for the purpose of stiffening the body portion.
Between the members 12 there extend upwardly, with reference to Fig. 1, showing the collar engaging members before they are bent to final position, three tongues, two outer ones 0 and a central tongue F Each of the tongues O has integrally formed on its outer edge a roll or curved part 0 for the purpose of stiffening the same while the tongue F is formed through nearly its entire length into approximately an open tubular structure for a similar purpose. These tongues O and F are bent to the positions indicated in Figs. 2 and 3 with the tongue F at its upper end, where it joins the body portion V, extending outwardly a slight distance beyond the plane of the tongues 0 so that when sprung outwardly or rearwardly, and to the left with regard to Fig. 8, the part of the collar band below the button hole may engage between the member F and the members O.
Refer now to Figs. at, 5, 6, 7 and S, the clip therein shown comprises the body portion P formed of wire, the free ends of which are inclosed within the centrally disposed tubular member a. The sections a comprise the members for engaging upwardly into the fold of the neck band while the members 6 take the place of the members 0 and the member (Z takes the place of and performs the same function as the member F in that form of my clip shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. The same general conformation and operation of parts it will at once be noted is found in each of the two modifications of my clip.
The clip is inserted in the neck band with the parts a engaging into the fold between the inner and outer layers of the neck band a and n of the shirt as seen in Figs. 6, 7 and 8 and the outer members of the tongue 6 extend outwardly through the button hole 71/ in the outer fold a of the neck band. The body of the shirt is indicated at N.
When a collar C having a vertically disposed button hole it is used, only the tongue (Z is engaged outwardly through the button hole as indicated in Fig. 6 while in the caseof the collar having a horizontally disposed button hole if the three tongues (Z and Z) are engaged through the button hole as indicated in Fig. 7. The tongue (Z when engaging through the button hole It may be sprung outwardly or r-earwardly sufficiently to permit the part of the collar band. 0 to engage between the tongue (Z and the tongues Z).
The clip may be formed either of sheet metal as indicated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 or preferably of wire as indicated in Figs. 4, 5, 6, v
7 and 8, in either case the general conformation, function and use of corresponding parts is the same.
It is believed from the foregoing description that the method of using my clip and the operation of the several parts thereof is sufficiently clear to call for no further explanation herein. I may add, however, that the tongues Z) and (Z may be readily bent or sprung to permit the neck band of the collar below the horizontally disposed button hole therein to engage between the tongues b and (Z with the tongue (Z inside of the collar.
hat I claim is:
1. A clip for the purpose described formed of suitable material and comprising a body portion having at the ends thereof, and spaced apart, upwardly extending members adapted to engage into and against the fold at the upper edge of the neck band of the shirt to hold the clip from moving upwardly, an elongated portion intermediate said extensions and slotted, longitudinally, to form three substantially parallel tongues, all of said tongues bent at substantially their bases to lie in substantially the same plane with each other and parallel with but spaced apart from the plane of said body portion, and to extend in a direction opposite said upward extensions, said three tongues adapted to engage through a horizontally disposed button hole in the neck band, thereby cooperating with said upward extensions to hold the clip in place, and through a horizontally disposed button hole in a collar, and the center one of said tongues adapted to engage through a vertically disposed button hole in a collar.
2. A clip for the purpose described formed of suitable material and comprising a body portion having at the ends thereof, and spaced apart, upwardly extending members adapted to engage into and against the fold at the upper edge of the neckband of the shirt to hold the clip from moving upwardly, an elongated portion intermediate said extensions and slotted, longitudinally, to form three substantially parallel tongues, all of said tongues bent at substantially their bases to lie in substantially the same plane with each other and parallel with but spaced apart from the plane of said body portion and to extend in a direction opposite said upward extensions, said three tongues adapted to engage through a horizontally disposed button hole in the neck band, thereby cooperating with said upward extensions to hold the clip in place, and through a horizontally disposed button hole in a collar, the center one of said tongues bent slightly outward near its junction with the other tongues and extended slightly beyond the other tongues to facilitate its insertion in a vertically disposed button hole in a collar.
3. A clip for the purpose described formed of suitable material and comprising a body portion having at the ends thereof, and spaced apart, upwardly extending members adapted to engage into and against the fold at the upper edge of the neck band of the shirt to hold the clip from moving upwardly, an elongated portion intermediate said extensions and slotted, longitudinally, to form three substantially parallel tongues,
all of said tongues bent at substantially their bases to lie in substantially the same plane with each other and parallel with but spaced apart from the plane of said body portion and to extend in a direction opposite said upward extensions, said three tongues adapted to engage through a horizontally disposed button hole in the neck band, thereby cooperating with said upward extensions to hold the clip in place, and through a horizontally disposed button hole in a collar, the center one of said tongues extended slightly beyond the other tongues to facilitate its insertion in a vertically dis posed button hole in a collar.
