CARRIER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 24, 1914.
Application filed July 24., 1913. Serial no. 780,884.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMns FRANoIs lVALKER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at McKeesport, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsyl- Vania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carriers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a carrier, and
the primary object of my invention is to provide a carrier that can be advantageously used for carrying bricks, pallets, blocks and other articles, the carrier having an adjustable gage that permits of loads of various sizes being moved,
A further object of this invention is to provide a simple, durable and inexpensive brick carrier that can be expeditiously manipulated for gripping a plurality of bricks and safely carrying the same without any danger of the load being dropped from the carrier.
I attain the above and other objects by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the carrier, Fig. 2 is a plan of the same, Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view taken on the line HIIII of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is a similar view taken on the line IVIV of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail sectional view of a portion of the carrier.
A carrier in accordance with this invention comprises a bar 1 that is T-shaped in cross section, said bar having the outer end thereof provided with ahead 2. Pivotally connected to the head 2 by a transverse pin 3 is the slotted enlargement 4: of a flat gripping head 5. The enlargement 4 is formed integral with the curved end 6 of a handle 7 and said handle is supported normally in parallelism with the bar 1 by a post 8, carried by the bar 1, adjacent to the head 2 thereof.
Adjustably mounted upon the bar 1 by a set screw 9 is the enlargement 10 of a gripping head 11 that confronts and co6perates with therhead 5 in gripping a plurality of bricks or other articles. It is through the medium of the adjustable head 11 that the carrier can'be adjusted to, fit upon a prescribed number of bricks, arranged side by side. lVhen the heads and 11 are placed in engagement with bricks the carrier is moved by the handle 7, and as it is suspended by said handle it is apparent that the head 5 frictionally grips the bricks and holds them in engagement with the bar 1 and the head 11. The handle 7 is always in position to be easily gripped and the ca pacity of the carrier depends upon the position of the head 11 relatively to the bar 1.
One embodiment of the invention has been illustrated but it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
lVhat I claim is A carrier comprising a bar T-shaped in cross section, a head carried by the outer end thereof, a gripping head having a slotted enlargement pivotally connected to said head, a handle having a curved end formed integral with said enlargement, a post carried by said bar and supporting said handle normally in parallelism with said bar, and a gripping head adjustably mounted upon said bar and confronting and cooperating with the first mentioned gripping head.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES FRANCIS WALKER.
