G. H. DIOKEY 81: W. DUSTER.
PLATE GLASS CARRIER.
No.417,28'7. Patented Dec. 17, 1889.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE H. DIOKEY AND VILLIAM DUSTER, Oil TARENTUM, PENNSYLVANIA.
PLATE-GLASS CARRIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,237, dated December 1'7, 18839.
Application filed August 6, 1889- Serial No. 319,914. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE H. DIOKEY and WILLIAM DUSTER, citizens of the United States, residing at Tarentum, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plate-Glass (larriers; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to apparatus for handling and laying plate-glass; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of such apparatus, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan view of an elevated railway for a carrier for the plate-glass. Fig. 2 is a side view showing the carrier on the railway and the suspended glass-holders. Fig. 3 illustrates the glass-hold ers in edge view.
A designates an elevated railway with branches A extending to different points where the plate-glass stock may be located, said railway forming a track for a carrier for conveying the glass to the bed used in connection with the grinding-table. The said carrier is provided with a wheel a, with a hanger 1) depending therefrom, and a horizontal bar cl, which at mid-length has a swivelconnection with the hanger h between the plates 0, so that the suspended plates of glass may be turned about as desired.
To the horizontal bar (Z are suspended the plate-glass holders 1), one being removably loosely connected, so that the holder may be lengthened or shorten ed, as hereinafter stated. To the upper part c of each holder is pivoted a lever C, the pivoted end of which is widened, and is also pivoted to one end of a strap or connecting-rod f, the other end of the strap being connected with the lower part of the holder, so that when the lever is turned down to a horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 2, the lower part of the holder is raised somewhat and the holder is shortened. The purpose of the lever C is to raise the glass plate somewhat from the floor after the plate has been placed in the holders, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
The holders B are provided with handles h, to be used by a person at each holder to move the loaded carrier along the track and keep it steady.
We claim- 1. In an apparatus for handling and laying plate-glass, the combination of a carrier provided with a wheel adapted to move on an elevated railway, a hanger depending from said wheel, a horizontal bar having a swivel-connection with said depending hanger, .and two holders which are suspended from said horizontal bar, each of said holders being formed in parts, which are loosely connected and are each provided with a pivoted lever, whereby the holder may be lengthened or shortened, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. The combination, with a bar of a carrier, of two holders, each of which is constructed in parts 6 e, which are loosely connected and provided with a pivoted lever C and connecting-rod f, substantially as set forth and described.
In testimony whereof we have affixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE H. DIGKEY. WILLIAM DUSTER.
