CI-IARLES SARKADI, OF AVELLA, PENNSYLVANIA.
LANTERN'.
To all @07mm t may concern Be it known that CHARLES SARKADr, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Avella, in the county of lVashington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lanterns, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to lanterns, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a simple and durable lantern having a novel shiftable hood that can be used for closing the lantern and protecting the chimney thereof.
A further object of this invention is to provide a strong and durable lantern consisting of comparatively few parts that can be easily assembled.
lVith the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the lantern showing the hood in an elevated position, Fig. 2 is a side elevation 0f the lantern, and F ig. 3 is a horizontal sectional" view taken on the line IIIIII of Fig. 2.
A lantern in accordance with this invention comprises a cup 1 provided with an interior annular rib 2 forming a socket for the lower edges of a chimney 3. The cup lis also adapted to support a candle 4 or other lighting medium centrally of the socket formed yby the rib 2.- Riveted or otherwise connected, as at 5 to the bottom of the cup 1 and to the sides thereof are diametrically opposed vertical arms 6, said arms having offset portions 7 at the upper edges of the cup 1. The upper ends of the arms are apertured, as at 8 and provided with a bail or handle 9.
Slidably mounted between the arms 6 is a Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led May 28, 1913.
Patented Mar. 24, 1914. Serial No. 770,466.
cylindrical hood l0 having the bottom thereof open and flanged, as at 11, while the top of said hood is closed. The sides of the hood, adjacent to the top, are provided with vents for Ventilating openings 12 and with diametrically opposed slots 13. The slots 13 accommodate the bent ends 14 of straps l5, said straps serving as guides for the hood lO relatively to the arms 6 and bail 9.
The closing movement of the hood 10 is limited by the offset portions 7 of the arms 6 and with the bail 9 in a vertical position the hood 10 can be shifted upwardly in proximity to the handle 16 of said bail, whereby the light of the lantern can be observed. Tlie arms 6 can be made of resilient metal to frictionally engage the flanged edge 11 of the hood 10, whereby said hood will be frictionally held in an elevated position.
The chimney 3 is made of heavy glass or vitreous material and the remainder of the lantern of light and durable non-corrodible metal.
/Vhat I claim is A lantern comprising a cup, an annular rib within said cup, a chimney held by said rib and adapted to inclose a lighting medium, diametrically opposed arms secured to said cup and having offset port-ions, a bail carried by said arms, a hood movable between said arms and adapted to be supported in a closed position by the offset portions of said arms and frictionally engaged by said arms whereby said hood can be supported in an elevated position, said hood having vents adjacent to the top thereof, and straps carried by said hood and adapted to guide said hood relatively to said arms and said bail.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES SARKADI.
