Description
W. U. PRATT. STOVEPIPE FASTENBR. APPLICATION FILED JULY 2a, 1913.
Patented Mar. 17, 1914.
v sT A STOVEPIPE-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 23, 1913.
Patented Mar. 17, 1914. Serial No. 780,704.
To all whom, it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. PRATT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Augusta, in the county of Woodrulf and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stovepipe-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a fastening device for stove pipes and the object of the invention is to provide means for securely holding the pipe within the flue thimble and also to allow proper adjustment so that the device can be employed with chimney walls of different thicknesses and also with stove pipe wall flanges of various sizes.
The invention consists of the novel features of construction hereinafter described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings in which,
Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1. i
In these drawings, 1 represents the pipe opening and 2 a suitable thimble adapted to be inserted in said opening. A stove pipe 3 fits within said thimble and carries upon its top a suitable plate A riveted or otherwise secured in place, to which is connected a vertically arranged guideway 5, said guideway being formed by bending or folding a strip of sheet metal lengthwise into a U- shape with a rounded bottom, the guide-way 5 so formed being provided with alining notches 6 along its upper edge, and the side members of said guide-way are cut transversely adjacent one end, the said end portion being bent into a horizontal plane thereby forming a tongue 5 and these tongues are formed at opposite ends and upon opposite sides of the guide-way, one of the tongues being riveted to the pipe and the other to the plate A. A plate 7 has its lower edge rolled over and slides freely in said guideway and is also notched as shown at 8 and is provided with a suitable integral post or thumb piece 9 by means of which it can be moved along the guideway 5. A suitable rod 10 has its inner end upwardly turned as shown at 11 to engage the inner face of the flue wall, and said rod extends outwardly between the pipe 3 and the thimble 2 and has loosely connected to its outer end a rod 12 and said rod 12 has a double angled end portion 13 a portion of which is adapted to be brought into engagement with the notches 6 and 8.
The usual ornamental collar 14 fits over the stove pipe and bears against the outside of the chimney wall, said collar being slotted as shown at 15 to permit passage of the rods 10 and 12.
When the parts have been placed in posi tion the plate 7 is adjusted in the guideway so that it will bear against the collar 14: thereby preventing any movement of said collar along the pipe 3, and the rod 12 is drawn outwardly so as to bring the upturned end 11 of the rod 10 into engagement with the wall of the flue, as shown in Fig. 1, and the angled end portion 13 is then brought into engagement with the alining notches 6 of the guideway 5 and in one of the notches 8 of the plate 7. This not only locks the pipe 2 in position but also locks the slidable plate 7 What I claim is 1. The combination with a stove pipe, a notched guideway carried thereby, a slidable and notched plate working in the guideway and means adapted to engage the inner wall of a flue and also adapted to engage notches of the guideway and slidable plate.
2. A device of the kind described comprising a stove pipe and a collar fitting thereupon and adapted to encircle the pipe opening, a notched guide way carried by the stove pipe, rods loosely connected together, one of said rods being bent to engage the inner wall of the flue, and the other rod being bent to engage the notches of the guide way, and a notched plate slidable in said guideway and adapted to engage said collar, the last mentioned rod also looking said slidable plate in position in the guideway.
3. A device ofthe kind described compris ing a thimble adapted to fit within a flue, a stove pipe adapted to fit within said thimble, a collar carried by the stove pipe, means arranged between the pipe and the thimble for engaging the inner face of the flue, a vertically arranged guideway having its upper edge notched, said guideway being permanently secured to the stove pipe, a rod loosely connected to the flue engaging means having an angled end portion adapted to engage notches of the guideway, and a plate normally bearing against said collar, the
said collar having an opening to permit passage of said rod.
WILLIAJM CHARLES PRATT.
slidable in said guideway, said plate being WVitnesses: also notched and adapted to receive the J. G. CONNOR, angled portion of the rod, the said plate G. W. BARKER.
