TOOL FOR SPREADING TIRE-CUTS.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, lVAL'rER PETERSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use- The object of my invention is a convenient and cheap tool for the purpose desired.
The invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings, of which,
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the tool; Fig. 2 a sectional view of the same; and Fig. 3 a section taken along the plane 3-3 of Fig. 2. I
The tool is composed of an external piece 1, and an internal piece 2 sliding within the former. Both of said pieces are provided with. jaws 3, 3, each of which is provided with a roughened portion 4 whereby the rubber may be more eflectively gripped. The internal piece 2 is provided with fingergrips 5, and the external piece is provided with a knob 6. There is also present a ratchet 7 upon the external piece, and a pin 8 upon the internal piece, operating as a pawl with said ratchet. A pin 9 driven into the external piece prevents the internal piece from falling out.
In operation the tool first has its jaws closed. It is then inserted in the cut of the tire. The hand is then placed with the palm against the knob 6, and the fingers grip the finger pieces 5. The closing of the hand thus spreads the jaws. The removal of the fingers from either the upper finger-grip alone or from both finger-grips simultaneously causes the inside piece to turn about its por tion 10 as a fulcrum and to enter the pawl pin 8 in the ratchet 7. The tool is left in said position until the repair is finished, whereupon it is withdrawn from the out.
It will be seen that the reason why closing Specification of Letters Patent.

pressure upon the jaws 3 produces a tendency for the inner member to both slide and turn relatively to the outer one is that the fulcrum-point 10 of the inner one lies practically within the continuation of the plane 11 of the jaw of said piece. Pressure exerted upon the jaw 3 therefore causes a tendency for the pawl to engage the ratchet, as well as a tendency to slide to close the jaws. Of course, as soon as the pawl has engaged the ratchet, the tendency to slide is completely prevented.
Attention is drawn to the fact that the tool may readily be modified without departing from the spirit of my invention, for instance, by placing the ratchet upon the internal piece and the pawl-pin upon the external portion.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A tool for spreading a tim out provided with two members sliding relatively to each other, means for separating the jaws from each other by sliding said members relatively to each other, and a pawl and ratchet mechanism operating in conjunction with said members for preventing the approach of said jaws by pressure on them.
2. A tool for spreading a tire-cut provided with two members, an inner and an outer, each of said members being provided with a jaw for inserting within the cut, the inner member being adapted to be slid relatively to the outer one and also having freedom to turn a slight amount relatively to the outer one, the fulcrum of the turning of the inner one being approximately in the plane of its jaw, whereby pressure upon said jaw produces a tendency to both slide and turn said inner member relatively to the outer one.
3. A tool for spreading a tire-cut provided with two members, an inner and an outer, each of said members being provided with a jaw for inserting within the cut, the inner member being adapted to he slid relatively to the outer one and also having freedom to turn a slight amount relatively to the outer one, the fulcrum of the turning of the inner one being approximately in the plane of its jaw, whereby pressure upon said jaw produces a tendency to both slide and In Witness whereof, I have hereunto turn said inner member relatively to the signed my name, this 17th day of July, 1913.
