IMPROVEMENT lN TOPS OF GAS AND VlIATER STOP- COCK BOXES.

My invention has for its object to improve thc cou- .struction ot' the tops of gas and water-pipe boxes, so
as to make them more convenient in use, and which shall prevent the possibility of the covers ot' said boxes being lost or carried off; and
1t consists in the combination of the sliding pin or bar with the cover and hex, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the body of the box, the inner edge ofthe upper part ot' which is beveled otf to i'orni a scat for the cover Il, and has an outwardlyprojecting flange formed around it in the ordinary manner.
I3 is the cover which fits into the bevelled upper end or" the body A, and has lugs'b formed upon its rear edge, by means of which itis pivoted or hinged to the upper end ofthe pin 01 bar O.
The bar or pin (l slides up anddowa in the sock- `et o' formed upon the side ot' the upper end of the box A, and has ay shoulder, e', formed upon the side ot' its lower end, .which enters a groove in the side oi' the socket a', and limits the upward movement ot' said bar by striking against the shoulder at the end ot' the said groove, as shown indotted lines in tig. 2.
By this construction, in opening the box A theY cover B is raised, raising the bar or pin C lto its limit, when the cover B may be turnedback upon the surface ot' thc ground, as shown in dotted lines in tig. 2.
This construction conveniently hinges the cover to the box, prevents the possibility of the covers heilig lost, and, when the cover is shut down, leaves the nppel: surface otthe top of the box entirely smooth.

I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentlhe sliding-bar or pin C, to which the cover B is hinged, iu combination with the cover B and upper part ofthe box A, substantially as herein shown and described, and t'or the purpose set forth.
