Description

mimi
THOMAS BABBITT GOMINS, JR.,
or LOWELL, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 108,973, datedNovember '8, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING-CHAIRS.
The Schedule efen'ed to in these Letters vPaizenl: and making part of the same.
I, 'lnoMAs BABBITT Comms, J r., of Lowell, the conntyof Middlesex and State'of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Folding-Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of my invention;
Figure 2 isa side elevation of the same, folded;
Figure 3 is a perspective `v iew'of one of the arms, detached; 'and' Figure 4, a similar view of a modification of thcsame.
This invention isvan improvement on the chair patented by me January 11, 1870; and
It consists in certain details of construction, which will be more fully described hereinafter.
In the drawingl A represents a rectangular frame, which consists of the parallel bar s A', connected at 'each en'd by the transverse rods'a, andrconstitnting the forward legs of the chair. l B B represent shorterbars, pivoted, at b, to bars'A. blelow the center, and constituting the rear legs of the c air.
- rlhe upper ends of bars B project slightly beyond the point b, and are provided with .the metallic or other pointsl C.
D D represent arms pivotcd to bars A above bars B, which arms are provided on their under sides with notches or depressions 'd and projections df,
E represents the seat-iframe, which' is composed of two cnlved sidepieces'e e, the front ends of which are connected by a suitable cross-bar, while to their rear ends are attached the upwardly-projecting lugs F, which are pivoted .to the bars B below the'point-b.
The pieces e may be curved,as shown, or straight, as in the original patent.
H represents a strip of cloth, which 'extends from the cross-bar a, at the upper end of frame A, to the bar which connects the front ends of pieces c, and constitutes the back and seat of the chair.
h represents a pin, which projects outwardly from 'each side of the frame A and supportsthe pieces e of the seat-traine When the chair is in the position shown in fig'. 1.,- thc. points Gfof the bars B bear against projections This construction 1s more comfortable than the original, inasmuch as it -is provided with arms and can be more closely packed for shipping, asthe elbowshaped lugs F enable the seat-frame E to lie closely on the other parts when folded, as shown in fig. 2.
If desirable, I dispense with notches l and projec- *Y tions di, and substitute grooves, d2, inthev under sides v of arms D, said grooves running nearly the whole length ofthe same, andthe holding ofthe parts et'- fected by latching pins h into; grooves It' in the under sides of pieces e, as in the originalpateunin which /case the points C ot bars B do not latch with arms D, excepting when at the cuter-ends of grooves di,
but merely support said arms and prei-ent them from- ]ateral displacement; and ther adjustment of the chair is effected in the patent referred to.`
Having thus fnllydescribed my'invention, What I claim as new, and desire tosccure by Letters Patent, is f The' arms, D, provided with notches l and project tions d, or groove d2, and scat-frame E, provided with elbow-shaped lugs F and notches h','in combination with bars B, provided with pins h, frame A, and cloth H, all constructed as herein described, for'the purpose specified.
'In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
. THOMAS B. COMIN S, Jn.
