DEVICE FOR USE IN FILLING ICE-CREAM PAPER CARTONS.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. as, rare.
Application filed August 7, 1912. Serial No. 713,923.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that T, LEONARD L WESTLING, of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Use in Filling Ice-Cream Paper Cartons; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
This invention is a novel improvement in devices particularly designed for use by confectioners and retailers of ice-cream in filling paper cartons with ice-cream and the like. ltts object. is to provide a holder for the carton while being filled which will enable the carton to be completely filled and packed with cream without distorting or bulgingthe walls of the carton, and after the carton has been filled and sealed it can be readily removed from the holder, and will have a symmetrical appearance and will be completely filled with cream, thus insuring that the customer gets a full and exact measure of cream, and also enabling it to be transported longer distances, or kept for a greater length of time, without the cream melting, due to the compactness with which it can be packed in the carton.
I will explain the invention more fully with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a holder with a carton therein ready to be filled. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional View on line 2-2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a simple form ,of such holder.
Urdinarily ice-cream. when sold at retail is packed in paper boxes or cartons which are slightly tapered on the sides and ends, being smaller at bottom than at top. If the cream is hard it is diflicult to properly fill the cart-on because the walls thereof will yield .and bulge and consequently the cartons are usually not properly filled with cream, and air spaces are left therein so that the customer does not receive a full carton of cream and because of the air spaces the cream soon begins to melt; which lessens the capacity for transportation in the carton.
By my invention ll provide a novel holder which is internally shaped to correspond to the external shape of the cartons, and, as shown in Fig.
1, preferably comprises a hollow body having tapered or outwardly inclined side and end walls which internally correspond to the external side and end walls of the carton, and which has a bottom upon which the bottom of the carton rests when the latter is placed in the holder as shown in Fig. 1. i
As shown in Fig. 1 the holder has a,front side 1, rear side 1, left hand end 1, right hand end 1, and bottom 1 and when a carton C is inserted in the holder as shown, it fills the holder but the flaps c, c of the carton can be opened up above the top edges of the holder as shown in Fig. 1.
In order to prevent binding of the outer vertical corners of the carton in the inner vertical corners of the holder, I preferably form recesses 1 in the vertical corners of the holder into which recesses the corners c of the box can project; thus insuring that the corners of the carton will not bind in the holder when filled.
The holder may be provided with a handle 2 which may be riveted to one side or end thereof as shown.
The end 1 of the holder may be hinged at one edge of the adjacent edge of the side 1 of the holder; any suitable hinges may be employed for this purpose, as indicated at 3. This hinged end l may be provided with a spring catch 4 which is adapted to engage a notch I at the edge of the front side 1 when the end 1 is closed, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. This catch will lock this end socurely in position while the carton is being filled, and when the carton has been filled and its flaps 0 and 0 closed, the catch 4 can be disengaged and the end 1 swung open as indicated in dotted lines Fig. 2, permitting the filled carton to be readily removed from the holder.
ltt will be seen by reference to Fig. 1 that when the carton is in position in the holder it may be filled with cream and the cream can be closely packed therein as the walls of the carton are supported by the walls of the holder and cannot yield outwardly, therefore the carton can be solidly packed full of cream and then removed. It is obvious that when so packed the cream in the carton will keep in condition for use for a much longer period than it would if loosely filled therein. Also that the customer gets a full by the breaking downor bulging of the carton and the confectioner is not annoyedtom of the holder are all rigidly united;
this form of the device can be usefully eInloyed with many cartons which can be lifted bodily from the holder after being The retailer of cream should be provided with a set of such holders, corresponding to the several sizes of cartons in which he retails the cream.
Obviously the invention while simple and inexpensive, is of real practical merit, and possesses the advantages above set forth.
What I claim is:
1. A device for use in filling paper cartons with cream and the like, comprising a holder having side and end Walls and bottom corresponding in interior configuration to the exterior configuration of the side and end walls and bottom of the carton to be filled; and adapted to hold said carton while it is being filled; the interior vertical corners of said holder being channeled to prevent the exterior corners of the carton binding therein.
2. A device for use in filling ice cream paper cartons comprising a holder having side and end Walls and bottom corresponding in interior configuration to the exterior configuration of the side and end walls and bottom of the carton to .be filled, and adapted to support the walls of the carton while it is being filled; one of the Walls of the holder being hinged, and means for locking said hinged side in closed position.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
