To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES R. CARDWELL, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Wallets, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and ex act description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.

My invention relates to wallets, and has for its object the construction of a very simple form of wallet and which is adapted to contain paper money within small compass.

In practisi'ng my invention, I employ a sheet of some suitable material, preferably leather, approximating in superficial area the size of a bank note, which sheet of leather I preferably crease along two lines, one extending longitudinally of the sheet and dividing the same into two equal parts and the other extending transverselyof the sheet and dividing the same into two equal parts, the four lines.v togetherdividingthe sheet into four equal parts. In securing the bank notes within the wallet, the wallet is opened flat, the bank notes are laid thereupon and the wallet is then folded along its creases so that the bank notes are creased similarly to the wallet andare held within the folds of the wallet.

In order positively to insure the retention of the bank notes within the wallet, I project a wing from one of the quarters of the sheet, which may overlie the bank notes and is inclosed within the wallet when folded. A second wing may also be projected from another quarter of the main wallet sheet for a similar purpose. The projecting wings preferably have sufficiently resilient connection with the main wallet sheet as to sheet of the wallet is discontinued just- Where the longitudinal and transverse creases intersect, so that said material Wlll not buckle and bunch at this intersection, Wh ch result is preferably accomplished by entirely removing the material so that there is a distinct aperture or opening through the main sheet of the wallet where the creases thereof intersect. This opening desirably extends along or in alinement with one folding line and laterally across that half of the wallet sheet that is inclosed by the remaining half of the wallet sheet, so as to enable the wallet to hold more bank notes than it would if the inclosed half of the wallet sheet did not have material removed at the location indicated.

I will explain my invention more fully by reference to the accompanying drawings showing the preferred embodiment thereof, and-in which- Figure 1- is a view of the wallet opened flat with the bank note receiving side of the wallet opened to view, a bank note being indicated in position in dotted lines; Fig. 2 is a reverse view of the wallet opened flat; Fig. 3,.is a view of the wallet partially folded; Fig. 4 is a view' of the wallet completely folded; and Fig. 5 is asectional view on line 5 5 of- Fig. 3.

The wallet comprises, in the preferred embodiment of the invention, a substantially flat main sheet a which approximates in superficial area of a bank note, said main sheet having projecting therefrom a pair of wings b, these wings being joined with that half of the main wallet sheet/that is to be interfolded by the remaining or infolding half of the wallet sheet. The main sheet of the wallet has a longitudinal crease 0 divid ing the wallet longitudinally into two equal parts, and a transverse crease (l dividing the infolding half of the main wallet sheet into two substantially equal parts. The wings b are shown as being attached to the main wallet sheet along the outer longitudi main sheet when they are released after having. been turned back,. whereby .sa-id I discontinue-the material of the mainsheet where the folding lines a and d intersect, to which end an aperture or opening f is preferably formed clear through the wallet, this opening .desirably extending in alinement with the transverse folding line and laterally across that half of the wallet sheet that is inclosed by the-remaining half of the wallet sheet to divide one-half of the wallet sheet itself into two wings,'so as to enable the wallet to hold more bank notes than it would if the inclosed half of the wallet sheet did not have material removed at the location indicated. In using the Wallet, it is opened flat as indicated in Fig. 1, the bank-notes are inserted between the wings and the main wallet sheet, as indicated at g in dottedlines,

whereafter the wallet may be preferably folded along thecrease c to crease the bank notes along a line substantially coinciding with the crease c, this fold of the wallet being indicated in Fig. 3. After the wallet has thus been folded, it is folded along its remaining-crease 03, so that the bank notes sheet to overlie'the free ends of the'folded Wallet, a fastener having its members 6 disposed upon the wallet sheet and flap so as to'be adapted for interlocking engagement to hold the flap in position. A securing chain or string may be attached to the wallet by' means of the eyelet 70 passing through the wallet.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent the following: I

1. A wallet comprising a rectangular sheet of suitable wallet material provided with longitudinal and transverse folding lines intersecting at substantially the center of the sheet-and having the material removed along said transverse folding line from the said point of intersection to an edge of said sheet, and means located along a longitudinal edge of the saidsheet to em-" brace and retain in position bank-notes disposed on the saidsheet when the Wallet is open.

A wallet comprising a main portlon consisting of a rectangular sheet provided wit-h a transverse folding line across its middle and having a longitudinal dimension approximately the length of a bank-note and a transverse dimension approximately one-half the width of. a bank-note, said sheet being provided at one side with a pair of outwardly extending'wings disposed on opposite sides of said folding line, said Wings and said main portion being adapted to receive one or more bank-notes thereon Whereby the wings and bank-notes may first be folded over onto the said main portion and 'the said main portion and bank-notes then
