Description

J. DOLAN.
RATGHET WRENCH.
APPLICATION FILED 0014. 191a.
Patented Feb. 17, 1914 JOHN DULAN, Oll DUQUESNE, PElllNSYLVANl'i-l.
BATCHET-WRENCI-L earners.
To all who/a it may concern Be it known that l, JOHN Down, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Duqucsn e, in the county of Allegheny and t itate of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in ltatchetl vrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a ratchet wrench, especially to one in which all of the movable parts tighten and move as one ratchet piece during the pulling action of the handle, thereby acting as chain-tongs, the parts loosening as the handle is reversed or for the purpose of taking a new grip.
The invention consists of the novel features of construction hereafter described, pointed out in the claims, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a. side elevation. Fig. 2 is a side view partly in section and with a side plate removed. Fig. 3 is a view at rightangles to Fig. 1, and partly in section. Fig. 4; is a detail view of a segmental spacing block. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a modified form of construction.
In these drawings, 1 represents a suitable socket adapted to receive a pipe or other handle 1. The handle socket 1 is provided at its solid end portion with a compound curved end face and a curved extension, which. extension is provided with a number of teeth 2, said teeth being preferably four in number. A ratchet wheel 3 is pro vided with teeth adapted. to cooperate with the teeth 2 of the handle socket and is also provided with a central polygonal opening adapted to receive a wrench, a tool-holder or any suitable tool to which rotation is to be given. The side plates at are journaled upon hub portions 5 of the ratchet wheel, said hub being provided with suitable openings 5 to which any suitable form of locking or fastening device, not shown, may be inserted for the purpose of locking the wrench or other tool against longitudinal movement through the ratchet wheel. The plates 4 project beyond the periphery of the ratchet wheel and are also extended so as to overlap the handle socket 1 to which they are connected by means oi a suitable pin or rivet 6, said pin passing loosely through the handle socket and serving as a pivot upon which said socket can rock as well as means for securing the plates to the handle socket. The plates are spaced apart and also connected to each other by a segmental block Specification of Letters Patent.

7 which partially incloses the ratchet wheel and is provided with suitable rivet openings, the side plates 4 and the block '7 being secured together by rivets or other suitable fastening means 4;. in order to permit a slight loosening oi the parts upon reverse movement or the handle and the tightening up of the parts upon the pulling movement of the handle, I have the rivets l rather loose, so that there is not an absolutely rigid connection between the plates and the block "I, and the plates also fit loosely upon the hubs The block 7 is slightly enlarged at one end and in said enlarged end is arranged a spring socket 8 in which is inserted. a spring 9 which bears upon a heel portion 9 formed upon the end of the handle socket 1 and upon the side opposite that of the teeth 2, and also adjacent to the rivets 6.
In operation upon a. pulling or working movement of the handle 1 the teeth 2 grip the ratchet wheel, and the plates a are drawn tight to the hub and. all of the parts turn as one rigid piece. Upon reverse movement of the handle 1 the handle socket will rock upon the pin 6 so that the teeth 9 will clear the ratchet wheel, this rocking movement beinglimited and checked by the heel 9 before engaging the spacing block T. Upon this rear movement the parts will loosen up, tightening again somewhat as a chain would upon the next pulling movement.
In 5 I have illustrated a modified form of construction in which two handle sockets are employed; two spacing blocks and in which the plates are shaped for connection with each handle socket, the sockets being indicated at A, the plates at B and the spacing segments at C.
lVhat l claim is 1. A. ratchet wrench comprising a handle portion having a curved extension provided with teeth and a hollow portion, plates secured upon opposite sides of said handle portion, a ratchet wheel closed between said plates and adapted to be engaged by the teeth of the handle portion, said ratchet wheel having hub portions upon which said plates are mounted and about which said plates rotate, and a segmental block spacing said plates a it secured thereto, said block partially inclosing the ratchet wheel and acting as a check to reverse the movement of said handle portion.
A ratchet wrench comprising a ratchet wheel having hub portions, plates loosely mounted upon said hub portions, a handle socket extending between said plates having a toothed curved portion adapted to engage the ratchet Wheel, a pin passing through said plates and said handle socket, said handle socket being adapted to turn upon said pin as a pivotal point, a curved block spacing said plates apart and secured thereto and a spring carried by one end of JOHN DOLAN.
