FRANK BAUER, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T0 OSWALD KALLINGER, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
TROU$ERS STRETCHING AND CREASING DEVICE.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK BAUER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Trousers Stretching and Creasing Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to a device for creasing trousers and the like and seeks to provide a simple and elficient form of device that may be inserted in the trousers when they are removed from the person, to press a crease in either side of the leg so that the trousers will have a presentable appearance when it is desired to wear them.
The present invention seeks to provide an improved creasing device with opposing edges that may be inserted in a trousers leg and the edges expanded by the insertion of a suitable wedge whereby sufiicient pres sure may be exerted to form a crease in both sides of the leg that will remain when the trousers are worn. It is customary to crease trousers, which is usually done by the pressure of a hot smoothing iron, but by providing thin edged creasing members, and a wedge that may be inserted between the members with sufficient expanding force, the trousers may be creased without the application of a smoothing iron.
A further object of the invention is to provide means by which the device may be suspended after it is inserted in the trousers.
A further object is to provide a latch by which the wedge may be locked when the desired tension is attained.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the claims appended.
In the drawings: Figure 1, is a view in elevation of the device. Fig. 2, is a view in elevation of the device with one of the inclosing members removed. Fig. 3, is a fragmentary sectional view, taken on line a-a of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of arrow I. Fig. 4: is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view, taken on line bb of Fig. 2

looking in the direction of arrow II. Fig. 5, is an enlarged view in cross section taken on line c-c of Fig. 2 looking in the direction of arrow III.
lVedge 1 is secured to guide bar 2 by rivets 3 and has grooves 1 and 5 formed lengthwise along the edges thereof, opening in opposite directions, the distance between the grooves being the greatest at one end of the wedge and dinlinishing gradually to the reverse end. Side covers 6 and 7 inclose the two flat sides of the wedge and incline toward each other along the two long sides thereof near their edges, the extreme edges thereof lying in a plane parallel to the body of the covers. The covers 6 and 7 are spaced apart along the two long edges there of sufficiently to receive loosely the creasing members 8 and 9, the inner edges of which rest in grooves 4t and 5, the wedge being free to slide end-wise and the creasing members being free to spread apart and expand in width as the wedge is inserted. and free to contract and diminish in width as the wedge is withdrawn. Slots 10 are provided in creasing members 8 and 9 through which rivets 11 pass loosely to allow side movement of the members and prevent longitudinal movement from their position between covers 6 and 7. The rivets 11 also pass through the covers 6 and 7 and hold them in relative position. Cover 7 has a groove throughout the length thereof with right angled walls 12 and 13 between which guide bar 2 is loosely fitted so that it may easily slide lengthwise of the cover. The barQhas a ring 14 in the end corresponding to the narrow end of the wedge for the purpose of suspension, and two lugs 15 and 16 near the opposite end, between which is fitted the lock latch 17, the latter being pivoted on pin 18, and provided with bent portion 19 to engage holes 20, and a spring 21 to hold the bent portion in engagement in the holes.
It will be understood that when wedge 1 is withdrawn the creasing members 8 and 9 are free to approach each other as far as slots 10 and rivets 11 will permit and in this position the device is inserted in a trousers leg, the wedge 1 is then inserted between covers 6 and 7 and the creasing members until the desired pressure is exerted on the outer edges of creasing members 8 and 9, when the bent portion 19 of latch 17 engages one of the holes 20 to hold the wedge in the desired position. The outer edges of 8 and 9 are thinned to the desired thickness so that when the pressure is exerted against the cloth and allowed to remain for some time a crease will be formed thereby, the intention being to insert the creasing device on retiring at night or at any time when the trousers are laid away for a change as is the custom and remove the devices when it is desired to wear them. To remove the device the end 22 of latch 17 is pressed toward the bar 2, which will compress spring 21 and withdraw bent portion 19 from one of the holes 20, the wedge 1 may then be withdrawn, allowing creasing members 8 and 9 to move toward each other, when the device may be withdrawn from the trousers.
The device is of chief importance for the creasing of trousers so that they will always have a presentable appearance, but may also be advantageously employed for the creasing of coat sleeves and the like.
It is obvious that numerous changes may be made in the details as set forth without departure from the essentials of the invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a trousers creasing device the combination of a sheet metal wedge provided with grooves formed on the opposing edges thereof and integral therewith, a pair of sheet metal creasing members with the inner edges thereof resting in said grooves, the outer edges of said creasing members sharpened to crease the opposing sides of a trousers leg, transverse slots in said creasing members, a pair of sheet metal casings inclosing the sides of said wedge, the edges of said casings resting loosely on said creasing members over said slots, and said casings riveted together by rivets passing through said slots.
2. In a trousers creasing device the com bination of a flat wedge provided with grooves along the opposing edges thereof, a guide bar secured to one side of said wedge, a pair of creasing members with the inner edges thereof resting in said grooves, the outer edges of said creasing members sharpened to crease trousers legs, a pair of casings inclosing the sides of said wedge, and a groove in one of said casings to receive said guide bar.
3. In a trousers creasing device the combination of a fiat wedge provided with grooves along the opposing edges thereof, a guide bar secured to one side of said wedge, a pair of creasing members with the inner edges thereof resting in said grooves, the outer edges of said creasing members sharpened to crease trousers legs, a pair of casings inclosing the sides of said wedge, a groove in one of said casings to receive said guide bar, holes in one of said casings, and a latch to engage said holes.
In testimony whereof I alliX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
