To aZZ 107mm it may concern Be it known that I, Jnrrnnson PAUL JoNEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jonesville, in the county of Hillsdale and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in .Vhiflietrees, of which the following is a specification reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in whiiiletrees, and more particularly to a combined double tree and swing'letree, the object of the invention be ing to provide a whiffletree which can be quickly converted into either a doubletree or a swingletree.

Another object of the invention is to provide a whifiletree of the above character which will possess advantages in points of efiiciency and durability, is inexpensive to manufacture, and at the same time is simple in construction and operation.

With these and other objects in View, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and pointed out in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan View illustrating the application of my invention. The doubletree is further provided at each end thereof with a pair of spaced parallel openings 3. Slidably mounted upon the rear face of the doubletree and arranged at each end thereof, is a plate 4, said plate being provided adjacent each end thereof with the openended slots 5 and further provided at its ends with the elongated slots 6 which are adapted to receive the guide pins 7 carried by the doubletree 1. The intermediate portion of the plate 4 is provided with an arcuate raised portion 8, which is adapted to be engaged by the fingers or a suitable tool, to actuate the plate 4.

A U-shaped connecting member 9 is provided, the ends of which are further pro vided with the notches 10, which are adapted to receive the side edges of the open-ended slots 5 after they have been passed through the openings 3. From this, it will be readily apparent that in order to secure the U- shaped member 9 to the ends of the doubletree, the plate 4 is raised so that the ends of the member 9 may be readily inserted through the openings 3. pressed downwardly so that the side walls of the open-ended slots 5 will engage within the notches 10' formedin the ends of the member 9. From the description, it Will be readily apparent that by the position of the plate, it will, be readilyheld into engagement with the ends of the member 9 to prevent the withdrawal of the same until the plate has been raised suflicient so that the side Walls of the open-ended slots 5 are entirely removed from the notches 10.

From the above, it will be readily ap parent that the swing'letree 11 may be quickly and readily attached to the ends of the doubletree or easily removed therefrom. In the construction of the Whitfletree, I provide that form of trace hook which consists of a circular body member 12 adapted for engagement over the ends of the swingletree and which is held thereon by means of the spring plate 13, the inner end of said plate being secured to the swingletree, as shown at 14, and said plate being further secured to the body 12 of the trace hook, as shown at 15. The outer end of the plate 13 projects beyond the body 12 and is provided with an opening 16 which is adapted to receive the inner reduced end 17 of a spring actuated plate 18.

The plate is then form of plate which is adapted for application to both ends of the doubletree 1. This form of plate is preferably constructed of a single length of wire, the intermediate portion of which is bent upon itself to form the spaced open-ended loops 16, which are adapted for engagement with the ends of the U-shaped member 9 to securely hold the same in its operative position. The ends of the wire are bent to provide elongated loops 17 which are slidably mounted upon the guide pins 7. It will be readily apparent that this form of device may be readily exchanged for the plate illustrated in Fig. 2.

\Vhat I claim:

1. In combination with a doubletree provided at each end with a pair of spaced parallel openings, of a plate slidably mounted upon the ends of the doubletree, said plate being provided with spaced open-ended slots, and a U-shaped member having its insertion through said openings and provided with oppositely disposed notches adapted to receive the side walls of the openended slots of the plate.

2. In combination with a doubletree having a pair of spaced parallel openings at each end thereof, of a sliding plate mounted upon the ends of the doubletree, and a U shaped member having its ends adapted for insertion through said openings and provided with oppositely disposed notches to receive portions of said plate to securely retain the ends of said member within the openings.

3. In combination with a doubletree having a pair of spaced parallel openings at each end thereof, of a U-shaped member having its ends adapted for insertion through said openings, and provided with oppositely disposed notches, and means slidably mounted upon the ends of said doubletree and adapted for engagement with the ends of the U-shaped member to removably secure the same within the openings.

5. In combination with a doubletree having a pair of spaced parallel openings at each end thereof, of a sliding plate compris ing a single length of wire having its inter- P mediate portion bent upon itself to form a pair of spaced open-ended loops and the ends bent to form elongated loops, guide pins carried by the ends of the doubletree and arloops, and a U-shaped member having its ends adapted for insertion through said openings and provided with oppositely disposed notches adapted to receive the side walls of the openended loops to removably secure the ends of said U-shaped member within the open ends.
