Description

WITNESSES:
M. I. O'KBEFE.
VALVE SEAT FORMER. APPLICATION 1 1L111) APB.23, 1912 Patented Feb. 17,1914.
' um'rnn' srarns MICHAEL 1i. OEKEEFE, OF MIDDLETOWN, CONNECTIGUT- I VALVE-SEAT ronMnn.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application fi1edApri123,1912. Serial no. 692,599.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL F. OKnnrn, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of Middletowrnin the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Valve-Seat Former, of which the folloi'ving is a specification.
My invention relates to the class of devices used for renewing the valve seatsin faucets and hke devices for controlling the flow of liquid, and an object of my invention, among others, is to provide a device of' this class in which the valve seats around openings pf varying size may be accurately out and finished.
One form of device embodying my inven tion and in the construction and use of which the object above set out, as well as others, may be attained, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view in central longitudinal section through a device embodying my invention shown as attached to a faucet, the
latter being broken away to illustrate the operation of the device. Fig. 2 1s a side view of my improved former. Fig. 3 is an end view of the same with the handlere moved. 1
In the accompanying drawings the numeral 6 denotes a faucet of ordinary construction having the usual diaphra 'm 7 with an opening 8 and a valve seat 9 around said opening.
The numeral 10 denotes the base of my improved former having an opening 11, preferably tapered from its outer'to its inner end and provided with a screw thread 12 arranged to fit thescrew threaded end 13. of the faucet, the latter being provided for the reception of the cap commonto these structures. threadedopening 15 through the base and is provided with a flange 16 that, may be milled to provide for turning asby the thumb and finger.
A spindle 17 is located within the sleeve 14 and a collar 18 removably secured to the spindle prevents it from movement in one direction in the sleeve 14 and a shoulder formed by. the enlarged head 19 prevents movement of the spindle in the opposite direction within the sleeve, so that the head 19 with its forming end 203s carried and is located by the sleeve. The upper end of A feeding sleeve 14 fits a screw the spindle may be formed for the reception of any proper means for turning it, a handie 22 removably fitted to the spindle being shown herein for this purpose, the handle having a socket engaging the noncircularly Patented nectar, rare.
shaped end of the spindle. The formingend 20 of the head may be of a shapeto provide a such form of valve seat as may be "desired,
and a cutter guide 21 projects from this forming end into the opening 8 in the diaphra gm 7. It is material that the lower end of the spindle shall have a guide to nicely fit the opening in the diaphragm so that the former shall be centered to accurately cut the valve seat. The opening 8 varies in size shoulders so that the spindle is carried and located by the feeding sleeve, when the valve feed is stopped, and the cutter being held in this position a continued turning movement seat has been cut to a sufiicient degree the of the'spindle will cause the edge ofthe cutter to burnish, thus finishing the valve seat without cutting action.
While I have shown and one form of device embodying my invention vthis structure may be changed to a greater or lesser extent without departing from the described herein I spirit or intent of the invention-as-defined by the claim herein. I
Iclaim- A valve seat former including a base,
having means for detachably securing it to a.
faucet or the like, a feeding sleeve located within the base and forming a bearing for a spindle, a' former spindle carried by said bearing, means f0r rigidly holding said spindle against longitudinal movement in either direction in said sleeve while perniitting'rotary movement of said spindle, and av cutter head secured to the spindle.
Y MICHAEL F. o KEEFE.
