To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga "and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Faucets, of which the followin isa specification.
This invention re ates to improvements in faucets, and the improvements comprise the simple organization of parts substantially as herein shown and described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
The object of the invention resides in the double-acting stem for the faucet and in the valve and its adjustable extension whereby the discharge of liquid may be regulated to corres nd to further objects are embodiedin'the packing washer for the valve stem, and in the simple screw regulator for the spout end of the fan:

In the accompanying drawings, Figure .1 is a sectional view vertically and longitudinally of the faucet, and Fig. 2 is a plan section on line 2-2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross section on line.v 3-3, of Fig. 4 showin the screw regulator for the outlet end of the faucet, and Fig. 4 is'a vertical section of the same device. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the handle and valve operating stem. Figs. 6 and 7 are sideand end views of the valve and its fluted extension.
The faucet comprises a body 2 having a main water passage 30f uniform bore inter? sected by a round chamber 4 of larger diameter which extends upwardly through a screwthreadedneck' midway between the ends ofsaid body. Said neck 5 is surmounted by cap nut 6 in sleeved engagement with the reduced. upper end? of the valve operating member which has its main portion 8 relatively enlarged and of smooth cylindrical form to fit snugly within the upper end of chamber 4, and the lower end or straight oval extension 9 of said member rests in rotatable engagement with the fiat bottom 10 of said chamber. The washer, packing and cap nut are sleeved upon the reduced stem 7 before the handle 15 is secured thereto; and a simple, cheap and practical mode of fastening the handle upon the stem is by compressing and contracting the round-middle head 16 of said handle in a vise or other pressure-applying device.
The lower ovalextension 9 of the handle member projects across the main water passage 3 and a. quarter turn of the handle in either direction will open the valve 17 as'is obvious when it is noted that said extension projects on both sides of its axial center equal distances and that the oval cross sectional formation of this extension provides a double cam ad pted to engage with the flat extremity 18 of the adjustable contact g" member 19 for valve 17. Member 19 has a screw-threaded stem 20 to enter one end of the screw-threaded central bore of the fluted guide-21 of the valve, and the said valve is of metal and flaring and has a short screw-threaded nipple 21 of its own to secure outer end of the guide 21. Member 19 is also fluted longitudinally for the free passage of water, and the valve- 17. is slidably held in true and fixed alinement with the central opening in the valve seat 23, which is a removable ringpf Babbitt metal, preferably. The faucet shown is also provided with a detachable drinking spout 3O constructed to restrict and regulate the flow of Water for fountain. efi'ects. Thus, the end of the spout has a flaring seat 31 covered by a screw-cap and hollow head 32, and a removable screw plug 33 is adjustably fixed within the spout end to control the outflow, which is in a thin sheet or film as regulated by the round flaring head 34 extending upwardly and outwardly from the reduced neck 35. The body of the screw plug has a central. slot 36 extending; from the bottom to the annular space or channel surrounding neck 35, thus providing a Water way and also two spring body sections which act to lock the screw plug in any" adjusted position. A. faucet body having a valve and a seat therefor, and provided with a tubular neck and a shouldered valve stem seated therein. in combination with a flat Washer seated upon said shouldered stem and upon the top of said neck and provided with a beveled edge, and a cap nut in screw engagementwith said neck having a compressible packing above said washer and surrounding its beveled edge.
2. A faucet body for fountain purposes having a Water passage provided. with a valve seat at its end, a valve for said seat and a fluted stein carrying said valve connected and adapted to be lengthened and shortened according to the Water pressure, and a rotatable handle having an elliptical end portion adapted to engage said valve stem and open the valve more or'less accord-- ing to the length of said valve stem.
