G. R. ABBOTT. EARTH CARRIER AND BUMPER. APPLICATION FILED MAR. 20, 1913.

UNITED STATES PATENT oE IcE.
GHEEN n. ABBOT'LIOF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, GHEEN R. Aaron, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Earth Carriers and Bumpers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an earth carrier and dumper. The object of the invention is to provide improved means for operating a two-part dumping bottom of a receptacle for earth excavations, so that both parts of the bottom may be opened and closed by moving a bar at one side of the receptacle.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanyingdrawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a longitudinal side view of the' Fig. 2 is an end view of the receptacle in which the two-part bottom and the mechanism for operating the same are shown in the closed position. Fig. 3 is also an end view in which the mechanism and bottom parts are shown in the open position.
Referring to the drawin the receptacle has two vertical ends, A, w ich are broader on a horizontal line across the top than at the bottom, lower edge, 6; the two sloping sides, C, are connected with said ends, and these parts are open at top and bottom.
The closure for the open bottom'consists of two curved plates, 03, d of equal width, the two together being of the same width as the curved part, b, and said plates having a length equal to the longitudinallength of the sides, 0. When the saidtwo curved parts, al, d, have their inner edges in contact with each other along the center line, a, as in Fig. 2, said parts constitute a closed bottomfor the walls of the receptacle. Each curved late, at, is stiffened lengthwise by an angle ar, f, extending along its lower surface at the outer edge,- and also by a bar, 9, along its inner edge. Each curved bottom plate is carried by two swinging hangers, H, H,
these two constituting a pair; one of said hangers being at one vert cal end, A, and the other hanger at the opposite vertical end.
Thus one pair of hangers,
H, support one bottom-plate, d, and the other pair of hangers, H support the other bottom plate,
Each hanger 1s attached by a pivot pin or bolt,i, through its upper art to a vertical end, A, of the receptac erthese pivots permit the hangers and bottom-plates to Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed March 20, 1918. Serial No. 7

swing from the closed position seen in Fig. 2, to the open position shown in Fig. 3, and vice versa. The improved mechanism to produce this swinging movement will now be described.
A lever, J, is at each of the two ends, A, of the receptacle and said lever, is pivoted intermediate of its ends by a pin or bolt, is, and the lever has Z, P, is employed and combined at opposite ends of the receptacle with each swinging hanger; one arm, Z, of each elbow is attached by a pivot, m, to the receptacle, and the other arm, 1, is attached by a ivot, n, to a swinging hanger. to ig. 2, it will be seen the elbow at the le -hand side is extended or-straightened out by an upward movement of the center joint, 0, of the elbow, and reference to Fig. 3, will show that by a downward movement of the center joint the same elbow is contracted or crooked. The elbow at the right-hand side has the same structure exactly but the parts are differently positioned, with the result that the upward and downward movements of its center-joint, 0 produces respectively a contraction and an extension which is exactly the reverse action of the first-named elbow. The said lever, J, extends between the two elbows, and the lever pivot, 7c,- is also between the two elbows; a link, p, is jointed to the lever, J, at one side of its pivot, 7:, and extends downward from the lever and connects with the centerjoint, 0, of the left-hand elbow. Another link, 9, is jointed to the said lever at the opposite side of the pivot, is, and extends u ward from the lever and connects with t e center-joint, 0 of i the right-hand elbow.
vertical movement. An" elbow having two jointed arms,
The result of this arrangement and combination of parts is, that whn the longer and free end'of the lever is raised, as in Fig. 2, the two-part bot-tom, d, d, is closed; but when the long end of the lever is lowered, as in Fig. 3, the said bottom is opened.
As shown in Fig. 1, the two levers, J,-- one at each endare connected by a rod or bar, r, that extends along the side of the receptacle, b moving this rod both levers will be actuate At one or both ends of the receptacle is'a flanged plate, 8, having holes t; when the levers, J, are raised a pin, u, maybe inserted in one of the said holes, 6, and said pin will take below the lever and serve to keep the levers in their raised posh tion. and prevent thehottom plates, of d,
